Was the CN Tower built in 1932?

My architect tutor said that the CN Tower was built by Ontario government in 1932 during the Depression to watch over the U.S.-Canada border in Niagara from Toronto in order to prevent job-seeking Americans from illegally entering Canada during the Great Depression. It was built specifically so that it was tall enough to see Niagara border from Toronto and alert the border patrol should any job-seeking Americans illegally cross from Niagara.

Is this true?

There are a bunch of people who already gave the correct answer...and yes your tutor probably should find another job if that is the type of information he is giving out to students

Just to put another spin on this, my mother watched them put the top part on the tower and she was born in the 50s...so um, no it certainly wasn't built in the 30s!

terrific
no, it's not true.
The construction started on 1973
It opened to public on 1976

All false -- what a hack.

hey jude
Are you joking? The Tower was build in 1976 and the reason was far more practical - the expanding of downtown and the building of skyscrapers started to cause telecommunication problems. The CN tower solved these problems.

snowbarbie
No, this is not true.

See the answers above.

I think, maybe your Tutor is teasing you - it is possible to see Niagara Falls from the CN Tower, but not possible to see job-seeking Americans illegally crossing the border!

Ha Ha Ha - funny though!

Construction started in 1973 but the official opening was June 26th, 1976. You should tell your teacher not to quit his day job. What a jerk.

In the 1960s, Toronto’s growing skyline created problems for radio and television transmission because the pre-skyscraper transmission towers were simply not high enough to broadcast over the buildings. The prime function of the Tower is a telecommunications hub and several Canadian radio and television channels broadcast from there.

The CN Tower is 553.33 m (1,815ft, 5 inches) tall or the equivalent of 5 ½ football fields stacked end-to-end.

It took approximately 40 months to complete the CN Tower. Construction started on February 6, 1973, and wrapped up in June of 1976.

The CN Tower was built in 1976 by Canadian National (CN) who wanted to demonstrate the strength of Canadian industry by building a tower taller than any other in the world. In 1995, the CN Tower became a public company and ownership of the Tower was transferred to Canada Lands (CLC) Company, a federal Crown corporation responsible for real estate development.
