We're going to Niagara Falls. Is it better to get a hotel on the US or Canadian side?

I've been to Niagara Falls before. We're not going to go to the casinos because we have two small children. We're going to Marineland on Saturday and then driving to Toronto. Do we stay on the US side Friday night and cross at the Rainbow Bridge Sat. morning? Or cross at the Peace Bridge Friday afternoon/evening and stay on the Canadian side. My two concerns are 1) Don't want to wait in a long line at the border 2) Inexpensive hotel. I already have a reservation at a hotel on the NY side but I can change it.

stay at candian side then you don't have to wait in line before going to any destination. If you get to wait in line the day before ou can relax afterwards when you get to the hotel. Well the further away you stay from the falls the cheaper it might be..check triprewards.com out to find a hotel near the area you'd liek to stay.

I don't think you'll have a long wait at the border. We went there the summer after 9/11 and even with extra precautions the wait was minimal. The longest lines (we could see from our hotel room) were on Friday/Saturday/Sunday nights starting around dinner time and continuing throughout the night. In the Niagara Falls area, there are more hotel choices on the Canadian side. If your children have not been to Niagara Falls, they would probably enjoy at least a bit of time walking around the Canadian side of the falls. With the exchange rate, Canadian hotels can be reasonable and part of the very high sales tax on Canadian hotels is refundable if you spend a certain amount per night.

Your best bet for purchasing anything in Canada is with a credit or debit card. Your receipt will look like you paid the worst rate exchange but when you get home, your bank will give you the best rate of exchange based on the day/time you made the purchase. It could take up to 2 months for charges to appear on your bill, but it gives you the best rate of currency exchange. Check with your banking institution for full details.

Canada CANADA CANADA... and Im telling you this, because I live in the usa, and have been to Canada, So I KNOW what im talking about.
THe canadian side is just georgeous... canadian are more friendly.. so, just stay there. Somebody else mentioned niagara on the lake... oakville is close too, and is just as beautiful

I would stay on the Canadian side. The Courtyard Marriott is located right in the tourist district so you can walk around and not have to drive anywhere. I have stayed there several times and it is inexpensive and clean and the employees have always been really helpful and nice. I think you will probably be waiting at the border to cross either way. It's summer and the border is usually really busy.

Canadian. There's much more to do and the hotels are closer. Be aware, the Rainbow Bridge is usually PACKED. It's the most used crossing point. We always use the Queenston bridge off I-190 in NY and the 405 in Canada. That a quiet crossing point.

My pick is the Canada side and you might save money too due to the exchange rate.

If you want falls views from the hotel, ther's no use staying on the US side. Canada side is a must, and I recommend Hilton on Fallsview Blvd. It can be expensive, but really worth the money. Try taking the upper floors, 30th floor and up. There's also a nice cozy German restaurant behind the hotel where you can have good breakfast for low prices.

It's probably not going to be easy to find an inexpensive hotel for a Friday night in Canada. If you already have one booked in NY just stay there and get up early Saturday morning. You never know how busy the bridge will be. Sometimes it takes ten minutes other times an hour. Good luck and have fun.

I would stay at Niagara on the Lake , it's a beautiful town near the falls on the Canadian side.

Well, see which place is cheaper. Im sure the US side since that side sucks when it comes to seeing the Falls. Maybe with the American dollar a lil strong than the Canadian dollar, you might get a price and you wont have to commute to go over to Canada to see the Falls.
