Not if traveling by land from the U.S. if you are U.S. Citizens. However, since you have plenty of time to get a passport, i would recommend it, it just makes everything easier.
If you are traveling by air, yes, you have to have one.
Currently, by land, a U.S. Citizen needs a photo I.D. (i.e. drivers license) and a copy of birth certificate or certificate of citizenship in order to go to Canada, and moreso, to get back in to the U.S. Having a passport expedites the process, and it's not hard to get one, so if you anticipate leaving the country, why not just do it? |

Passport Rules Change
Sunday, December 31, 2006; P01
Happy new year. Now get a passport.
After numerous delays, the first phase of the government's Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative is about to become a reality. On Jan. 23, U.S. citizens traveling by air between the United States and Canada, Mexico, Central and South America, the Caribbean and Bermuda must present a valid passport. (U.S. territories such as Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands are exempt.) In the past, many of these destinations required only a valid U.S. driver's license or other official ID.
Phase 2: Travelers will need passports if going by land or sea to the regions mentioned above as early as January 2008 and no later than June 2009.
Since the initiative was announced by the Homeland Security and State departments in April 2005, U.S. travelers have taken heed, with a surge in passport applications. Yet "we are turning them around in the same amount of time -- four to six weeks," says Derwood Staeben, senior adviser for the initiative.
To simplify land and sea crossings, the agencies are developing a "passport card." The wallet-size card, which would be limited to travel between the States and Canada, Mexico, the Caribbean and Bermuda, would cost $20 for adults and $10 for children, plus a $25 processing fee. The card could be unveiled by late summer.
First-time passport applicants must apply in person at a passport facility (see Web site below for locations); the cost is $97 for ages 16 and older.

For travelling to Canada, you just need government issued identification (driver's license) and proof of citizenship (original birth certificate)
The confusing part comes for the return to the USA.
If you are flying, you need a passport effective January 23, 2007. If you are returning by land or sea, you just need the government issued identification (driver's license) and proof of citizenship (original birth certificate)
For land and sea the new regulations take effect January 2008. (at the earliest)
Enjoy your trip to Canada |

YES!! It's called the Western Hemisphere Travel Directive. Takes effect for flying in next week, and for driving transborder by the end of the month. |

If we will be required to produce a passport to fly to the States starting Jan 23, I hope that you will have to show one to come here. Tit for tat! |

There is a technicality here. If you are driving into Canada, you will need adequate identification. License, birth certificate, etc. However, to get back in to the US, a passport could be required. I would play it safe and get the passport and save the trouble. I have the same situation in that I will be traveling to Canada in September. Passports at this point are $97. If you have your photo taken, you can expect to pay $7 or more. If you have a digital camera, you can do it yourself. But there are very specific sizes for the photo.
You can download passport applications at the Department of State website. |
