If you plan to take a taxi, they prefer cash so you may need a few Canadian dollars on you. If you are from the USA, many places will take the US dollar at par now, since the exchange rates are so close to each other.
If you are coming in your own car, then you can just go to any ATM in Canada and use your bank card.
Most restaurants, shopping malls, boutiques and hotels will take credit cards (Visa and Mastercard), but you will want cash for the fast food restaurant or for buying a trinket from a street vendor.
I would also advise that if taking money from an ATM, take out a lump sum you need for the day, not a little at a time. It is better to take out $200 once a day than $50 four times, since banks will likely charge you usage fees since your bank card is not from their network. These can be from $1 to $5, and you don't want to rack up too many of those extra bank fees, unless you just are not comfortable walking around with $200 in your wallet. |

It is best to take your ATM card and get cash out as needed. You get the best exchange rate from the ATM machines. |

take travellers cheques to pass through customs (they require you to have a certain cash amount to pass through, plus are very safe against theft) and then use your bank cards. |

have some cash on you at all time (not whopping amounts)
and have a credit card or atm card.
SteveN nailed this answer (just like every other answer), i'm impressed. |

Barclays do a travel card. Its like a debit card that you put money onto whilst in the u.k then it works as a Visa card overseas. It prevents the risk of losing cash, but has the usability of a Visa credit card without the overseas charges.
But also, the Post Office credit card dont charge for overseas purchases. |
