I am French from Québec and I moved to Edmonton Alberta in 1988 to 1993. I barely spoke English then. I quicky made friends with ladies in my neighborhood that were young moms like me so I didn't really feel I was disliked. I was often told by those friends that they were glad they had met me cause before they thought French québécois were just a bunch of complaners but realized through my friendship that we all want the same thing, we want to work, good schools for our kids, good healthcare etc.
On the other hand, when I moved to Edmonton it was right in the middle of the Lake Meech negociations. Québec didn't want to join and the media were showing each day videos of anglophones burning the québec flag...that was horrible! My then husband (also French) was in the Air Force and for a whole year he was harrassed at work. He was told to 'speak white' and even some of our francophone friends found body bags on their front steps in the morning or funeral ornements!
One of my friend was working in a Pharmacy, she was French but spoke an empeccable English, she asked me to never speak French to her in front of people, she didn't want anyone to know she was of French Heritage. She was simply ashamed of it. Can you imagine 'me' coming straight from Québec with all my francophone pride I could not understand how she could deny her heritage. I realized after it was the reality of being Franco-Albertan.
In conclusion: I met wonderful people that I am still friends with up to today. I believe the rejection we felt was caused by the political situation of back then. I will always remember most people's reaction when they learn I was French, they would always reply: Oh! but you're nice!! ....as if it was impossible. |

Simply put. No.
Western Canadians are very proud, Like Quebecers, but do not appreciate having a misunderstood culture pushed down their throats, like most people.
You will be welcomed with open arms. Enjoy the beautiful side of the country and enjoy all of Canada. |

In my peronal opinion that is not true at all! I would treat a Quebecer the same as I would anyone from any other province (Im from Vancouver).
My aunt and uncle have a fruit orchard in the Okanagan and tey always hire french canadian pickers, they say they are always very nice and good workers. I have had multiple Quebecois teachers as I am in French immersion and loved them!
I have ever heard anyone saying that they dislike Quebecers. We're all Canadian right? |

All my family lives in Manitoba or Vancouver and none of them dislike people from Quebec or people with French accents. :) |

Can't speak for Alberta, but BC is pretty chill. The only resentment we have towards the Quebecois is that we now have to take French in highschool. At least we did in my town. But they never provided us with legitimate teachers. Meaning we failed federal standings. And that feeling is not so nice.
But honestly, they're not so bad. I'd say it would be difficult if you don't speak English, but you do and quite well. So I think you'll get along fine. If anyone is exceedingly rude, I must apologize on my province's behalf. Do I what I do. Kill them with kindness. "This is such a beautiful province. Canada is such a great country isn't it." Pretty much kills anything negative they could think about you. |
