Hey, I;m a Brit too and have just moved here with work. I have to say, that on first impressions its a very nice place to live. I;m in Ottawa so can only base my impressions on the one city but on the whole I've been very impressed. I note that a couple of people have mentioned the taxes here, I have to confess to still being ignorant of that - but based on conversations I;ve had with people here, its really not that much worse than home - and at least you KNOW you're being taxed, not a load of good old Gordy's stealth taxes.

The people seem generally very nice, Ottawa is very clean and pleasant and salaries seem to compare pretty favourably with home. As for the winter etc, I quite like the idea of proper seasons, as opposed to damp and miserable pretty much all year round.

Bottom line - I'm going to find it very hard to leave here when my contract is up...

My family is from England, we moved here in 1973 when I was 14 months old. We have lived in Eastern and Western Canada and would never move back to England. My mum says she loves it here because of the gorgeous scenery like the mountains (she also hikes and snowshoes) and the fact that there are 4 distinct seasons with generally a lot of sunshine (depending where you live of course!)

I'm from London UK, and i've been to Canada a few times, Calgary, Saskatoon, Edmonton and Vancouver. I'd say Canada is a much better place to live in compared to the UK. There's just to much garbage going on in the UK. I like Calgary out of all the places i have been too. People are much more friendly, they talk politely, very helpful. But health care is a well known problem over there!

CANADA IS THE BEST PLACE EVER! if u move here it's going to be awesome! it's cold in the winter but it's worth it Canada has wonderful school programs and many highschools to choose from. many shopping centers and if u live in alberta they have the BIGGEST MALL like ever. like over 1000 stores like 23 amusment parks and this huge waterfall all inside 1 mall! taxes r high though

I live in Canada and I have American relatives and have been to the US many times and it seems fairly similar.

OK...if you're British its fairy simular to your country. In fact our government and many other things are based on the British system. I even live in a city in Canada called London and we have a Thames River running through. A Piccadilly Street and probably a million other things I wouldn't notice just because I'm used to them. P.S. Coronation Street is aired here daily.

its good to live in Canada. we have 4 seasons up here and no hurricanes

well the first thing i think we should mention is that CANADA is HUGE
it's bigger than the USA
so, it really varies depending on where you live

canadians tend to be friendly (not all, but on the whole)
our crime rate is lower than the USA, but we still have crime
we have universal health care which is much different than the USA, not to say it's without it's problems. cuz we certainly have problems with our health care

yes we have electricity
it cracks me up that people assume we don't have all the necessities of life here
oh hell yeah we do

;)

I guess it's very pleasant.
I've been living in a neighborhood that's extremely safe.
Theres a lot of seniors or a good amount that watches out of their window for the community.
It has actually a low murder rate, than countries that my teacher told me about.
To be honest, I wouldn't want to live anywhere else.

I love living in Canada. It is a big country with a lot of natural resources. Each province has it's own unique landforms, people and lifestyles. There is a lot of diversity across Canada but in Toronto, Ontario it is the biggest multicultural city leading the way in terms of excellence for tolerance and peace with the amount of cultures all together in one city. And it is great here we have Little Italy, The Danforth (Greek), China Town, and on and on I could go, there is just about everything. You could enjoy almost every type of cultural food, there are fantasitc cultural food markets, bizzares, shopping areas, and continuous events at the International Centre and many other big venues downtown.
We have the British Show every year downtown and one of the cast of Coronation Street is always a guest star, we love Coronation Street in Canada. We have Niagara Falls, Montreal (what a great city!), the beauty of the Bristish Columbia and the Maritimes, you know you would find you need a lifetime plus to explore all the beauty there is in each unique province in Canada from the west to the east and the north to the south!!

There are the expected problems everyone has everywhere but we generally are united and caring. We pay high taxes yes, but we also don't want to see our communities doing without. Our Health Care System has it's problems for sure, but we are nothing without it, it really makes a huge difference that we have a system that means we don't have to worry about losing our homes to pay for health care. The price of things is significantly high like education but on the other hand we also have plenty of employment opportunity but it varies from city to city so that you have to research before you move here. We are a relatively young country with a lot still ahead of us to accomplish but it is the land of opportunity. We have a lot to do though, like beating crime, especially gun crime, and so we continue to try to be independant from other countries in that respect and try to lead by making good laws and good community programs. We hope to maintain our financial stability (not driven by other countries), and of course stay a peace keeping country.

Our proximity to the USA is great and we really love our American neighboroughs and I have travelled there frequently to enjoy their hospitality and beauty.

Okay it does get cold here in the dead of winter but that is it, and the winters vary from year to year so it is not always a cold winter. The weather generally varies like most places but it is beautiful to see the four seasons. We have just about everything here perhaps more than most countries. Canada is unique and to some extent a well kept secret. For sure we have much that is still undiscovered. The igloos if you will ever get to see one live, are not anywhere in the southern regions of the provinces although we may try to build one in the winter if we get a record snow fall.......:)

It's really fun although sometimes it's cold... Especially if you live near the coast.

Depends on where you live. West coast is very much like America. The big cities are super multiculturaled but is a 'tossed salad' not a 'melting pot' so we don't' have much culture. The west coast lacks art, culture and music since it is still very new. The European settlers first landed in Newfoundland and settle in the east. People in the west coast are very secretive and cliche since so many foreigners came in, they have to maintain their groups. A bunch of unfriendly people especially in Vancouver. Very slow in Vancouver due to all the drugs and drug problems. Central Canada is very ignorant and red necky, but not all of course, but just in general they are. Eastern Canada is the best especially the maritimes. Very friendly warm open people. Honest, they will take you in like a best friend but also start fights easily since they don't hold anything in. They have a rich European culture with their architecture mimicking many European cities. They are a bit naive tho, too nice. Quebec is the snobby area but very rich in culture and pride. Very nice art, music and culture. A few hours drive and it looks like many different places in Europe. No wonder they want to separate from Canada. Taxes are high tho but we get free health care and education until college.

You're lucky, I wish I was British. Rather a European passport any day. I know UK is a bit different from the traditional European countries, but all my European friends such as russians, estonians, sweeds, norwegeons hate Canada, esp. west coast since it has no culture. They don't like the people.

So to sum it up, west coast is more westernized, east coast is more European, Central are farming.
