What's it like to live in North Dakota?

I'm from New York City and I wanna live somewhere much colder. I absolutely LOVE cold weather. NYC winters are very warm and lacking for me.

I know I love cold because I was in Montreal, Quebec this winter and one evening it got down to -2'F with a -20'F windchill and I was just loving every second of it. Clear blue skies, huge plooms of steam rushing out of your mouth and nostrils, crunching snow under your feet... I love it all.

I'm contemplating either moving to Minnesota, North Dakota, or Fairbanks, Alaska after I finish college with a Nursing degree.

So whats it like living in ND? Around Fargo...
Cost of living... easy to get a job? How are outside recreational activities there?
Do people go to Winnipeg or Minneapolis more often?

Thanks in advance

I think it would be a real change, going from NY City to Fargo. You are talking about the financial capital of the world, and going to small city USA, in the middle of the Upper Midwest. I have traveled to Fargo many times on my way to and from Winnipeg and I found it to be a nice and charming city. The city is set-up nicely and it is a quiet city, not many things to do like in NYC. The cost of living there is much less than in NYC. In terms of the cold, ND is very cold because it is in the middle of the Upper Midwest, much of the Artic air hits off of the Rockies and then goes east/southeast which would put Fargo in the center of the cold air. The winters are long and cold, but if you love it, you will do fine.

In terms of a job, you would have to tell what kind of a job you would want. In the Midwest, there are a lot o jobs but in terms of nursing, you would find better possibilities in the southeast, like in Florida. But in terms of jobs, you would be more looking into the agricultural sector, trucking, and things related to that. As for things to do, Fargo has a lot of things, especially hockey related activities, lots of festivals and gatherings related to the various seasons of year. The Upper Midwest is heavily influenced by the Scandinavian and German settlers that settled in that region and so their festivals are prevalent. You can do things like hunting, fishing and boating because everyone there is very outdoorsy.

As for visiting Winnipeg and Minneapolis, my friends from Winnipeg visited Grand Forks, which is closer to Winnipeg, and about an hour away from Fargo. They did it because there was decent shopping there and again, closer to the border. Some have visited Fargo, but for them, it was eaiser for Grand Forks. And the border is like 2 hours away if you want to do some duty-free shopping on the border. As for going to Minneapolis, people do go there, it is just that you have to drive there and it takes time. What is nice about Fargo is that the Indian casinos are nearby so you can go and gamble there.

This is a strange place to ask this question. You'll probably get more interesting answers if you put it on a US site.

Move to Minneapolis first...it will be less of a culture shock. North Dakota is very hick. My family is from there, and I've visted my whole life, actually grew up in a small town on the border, but prefer to live in "The Cities". Yes, COLD winters, in all of the MN/ND/SD regions. Bring long underwear, and snow tires!!

I live in Fargo, and I love it.

North Dakota is wealthy right now, doing very very well, while the rest of the country is struggling.

You don't know cold until you've come to Fargo! Its the freakin WIND- we are so flat. It gets really cold! So you'll like that. Blizzards, floods, tornados- all that exciting stuff, haha.

The summers get hot, 80s and 90s, sometimes breaking 100. The springs and falls are GORGEOUS. I really like it here. The downtown area of Fargo is really growing, lots of shops and high end fashion and that sort of thing. We've got more restraunts per capita than any other city in the US, so if you like going out to eat, there ya go :) There's some good bars/clubs, too. Its fun!

ALSO- the people are great! When I travel around, I'm amazed at how unfriendly people can be. I love coming home to Fargo!

move to minneapolis, it would be an easier transition from NYC. Very cold but still enough stuff to do and its cheap enough. Or maybe Detroit?
