What's the best place to live in the Greater Toronto area?

We are a family of four and have two school aged daughters. Community, transport and schooling are my priorities.

Etobicoke...City on it's own, but it amalgamated and became part of the GTA...

Personally I'd stay away from Toronto (GTA) though. Go to St. Catharines (across the lake from TO) nice 'small' city (135,000) great price on homes here and there's a fair amount to do. Only an hours drive to Toronto.

Rosedale is a very pretty area. I would suggest looking for a place there. no crime, clean streets and great schools.

If you are an urbanite and your kids love action, I would suggest the Annex. It is around bloor and Spadina.

You are right on the subway and right in the midst of things

Another nice area is Lawrence and Yonge or Bloor West Village. these are all in the city but very friendly to kids.

Southern Mississauga. IE south of the QEW very close knit family oriented community with plenty of park space, good schools, shopping and regular activities and festivals throughout the summer months.

You are close to all amenities including GO transit and Mississauga transit no matter where you are in this area.

Very nice quiet area beside the zoo.

The beaches are very nice, quiet, and clean, as well as accessible by TTC, full of families, and have great schools in the area

Newmarket and Aurora area. It's about 45 minutes north of the city. Everybody's nicer, cleaner, and actually has a brain. And, no, I don't live up there; I actually live closer to downtown Toronto.

Personally, the suburbs would be my choice too (either Durham or Peel region) but if you want to live in Toronto, my suggestion would be one of three areas:

Greek Town (Danforth from Broadview east to Victoria Park)
The Beach (South of Gerrard between Coxwell on the West and Victoria Park on the East - those are the official boundaries set up when The Beach district was established back in the 1800's)
Parts of Scarborough (I would only recommend the southern part of Scarborough though (south of Danforth Avenue between Victoria Park and Brimley).

Those are three fairly decent areas to live in - I've never heard of any shootings in those areas and my neighbors were always great. My aunt lives in that area of Scarborough and until Thursday my cousin was a school aged daughter of hers. Never any problems and none of these areas are far from either subway stations or buses.
