What's the best time of year to visit Nova Scotia and what do we need to know about visiting?

Also, what's the best region to visit and do you have any tips: restaurants to dine at, museums to visit, places to see, things to do...
Additional Details
Thank you SO much for what you've all said so far. This is really very helpful. We will be traveling with our children who LOVE to go fishing and eat seafood. If you know of any great fishing spots or good (not too fancy) seafood places, please share. And THANK YOU!

Well when me and my husband went we took our children too. We stuck to the South shore This is the route we took.
First visit mahone Bay the sea side is beautiful with a great gazebo and quaint shopping then hit Lunenburg and went to the fisher mans museum great aquariums and you can take the kids on the boats to see how the fishermen lived on them its so cool. You can also do some whale watching there, ask about it at the museum. The whole lunenburg main street was great cause its a historic landmark and has alot of great restaurants on the shoreline (also great ice cream) then we went to bridgewater there they had a great farmers market and the nicest beach carters beach then we scooted down the shoreline and stopped at various beaches I remember crescent beach the waters were a little frigid but the pathways for hiking were stupendous. we made our way down to shelbourne and like lunenberg the downtown was quite the same I also recommend visiting the Annapolis valley in kentville they have a driving range and a super flea market located in one of their old drive in movie space. also little reminder is that all of nova scotia has frenchies these are second hand stores and super deals on brand name items there I'm a sucker for a good deal I hope you have as much fun as we did good luck with your trip

August is probably the best time of year because it tends to be warmer and you can get to the beaches. We have some of the best white sand beaches...and they are not crowded for the most part.

Every region of NS would have something unique for you to see. I live on the South Shore (Queens and Lunenburg counties). We have quaint fishing villages and beautiful beaches. Halifax is where you will find the shopping and most bars per capita in Canada (and the street Buskers!). Cape Breton has a wonderful driving route (Cabot Trail) and the Fort in Louisbourg. The Annapolis Valley would be great this time of year as it has a lot of farming communities and great roadside farmers markets.

If you want tourist information go to www.novascotia.com

during summer go to lunenburg county on the south shore. It has all the activities you mentioned and while in bridgewater be sure to find a restaurant just out side of town ( hebbville) called The Blarney Stone. Order the seafood platter you will not be disappointed.

August is the warmest, but early October is the best. Warm days, cooler nights and the most beautiful display of coloured leaves you will ever see. Since you will have to drive through New Brunswick, see the Bay of Fundy area, particularly Hopewell Cape, with the highest tides in the world. The rocks at Hopewell Cape look like giant flowerpots next to spectacular cliffs, and you can walk on the ocean floor at low tide.

If you're driving from Calais, Maine to Saint John, NB, stop at Comeau's at Pocologan (half way between the two towns) and have their seafood platter or any of their seafood dishes. To die for! They serve real local fried clams, not those cardboard things out of a package. And scallops, and haddock, and shrimp, and lobster and .............. ! Not fancy, just plain good home cooking.

ROCKET
Did a bike trip around the island fall os 04'. It was freak'n amazing. I cant speake of the other seasons, but that was an amazing time to be there.
Check out Halifax, great people and food. Yarhmouth as-well (not sure of spelling here).

If your american whatch road speed (km) they take them very seriously.

summer is the best, as for every thing else you asked about , just explore and injoy the beer, we Canadians love our beers , injoy and have a good time , you'll love it there

you need to know that jeffrey's right. keith's s**ks. i dissagree about the camel. i think it was filtered through a goat. you're gonna want to go to one of the many fine microbreweries they have. Nova Scotia has MANY fine beers and ales, but keith's ain't one of them.

jeffrey m
GOOD answers. i don't live there but it's great. just stay away from keith's. they'll try and make you drink it. but trust me, stick to molson or labbatt beer. keith's tastes like they filtered it through a camel. other than that NS is wonderful. i'm quite sure you'll like it as long as you DON'T drink keith's.
