What's the proper term for Black people from Canada?

I mean... here in America, I'm an "African-American", but what if I was from Canada? Would I be an African-Canadian??? what in the h*ll??? that just doesn't sound right... Or is there no proper term at all? Are they just called "Black"? Can somebody please explain this for me??? WHAT IN THE H*LL?!?!

How about Martian-Canadian?..just a thought bro,...since it seems like you want to distance yourself from being a Canadian as much as possible.

From my point of view, there " Canadian Citizens " race has noting to do with it.

One of my neighbours is called Margie. I refer to her as my neighbour, Margie and if whoever I am talking to does not know which neighbour I am talking about, I usually say the pretty young one - most of my neighbours are older folks. In the four years we have been neighbours, I think I have referred to her as 'Margie, the black gal" once or twice as it identified her quickly from among the young pretty girls she was with who were all white girls. Her family has been here for over 200 years. Why on earth would I call her African? She does not call me British. My ties with Britain are about as far from me as her ties to Africa are to her. She is just another Canadian.

Well, I think it's just black people or Canadian

Even here in America, i've come across plenty of black people that don't like the term African American because they feel no ties to Africa. The term African American was actually coined by Jesse Jackson because he felt it was PC and since many people think he's like the "go to" person for black people and speaks for us all... They started calling black people, African American.

But really, they're just Canadian.

old lady
Guess what - there isn't a name. Most times it doesn't really matter. When it does, if, for example, you have to identify someone or describe someone, then you just say they are Black. The rest of the time, they are just Canadians.

We call them Canadians or people. Sometimes "black" is used as a description.

In Canada, black Canadians are called:

"Canadians"

There are so few of them that there is no point calling them anything else. its not like they have ever been discriminated against.

Buddy, bro, dude like everybody else , or just Canadians.

The term "African-American" was created to denote people of African descent, but who (because of slavery) don't know specifically which African country their ancestors come from. (I.E. If you know your ancestry is Nigerian, you might say Nigerian-American, just like some people refer to themselves as Italian-American or Irish-American. But if your ancestors were slaves, there was no record kept of where they came from. They were even forbidden from speaking their "native" language. So all that history was lost.)

There was no institutional slavery in Canada, so there isn't a need for a generic term like that. Canadians are Canadians, regardless of skin colour. If they want to denote their ancestry, then they can call themselves Jamaican-Canadian or whatever, but that's certainly not common. People just say what nationality they are. I.E. "Hi. I'm Canadian, but my parents are from..." the United States/Barbados/the Sudan/Nigeria/Gabon/Ivory Coast/Trinidad/etc.

Pro-life
most people just call them Canadians......if they came from Africa (them themselves) than you could call them African-Canadian but most people just call them canadians

Canadian... other wise you open up a can of worms you don't want to open. Remember people whom you see in Canada come from all over the world and labeling them is not appropriate at all.
