What's the weather like in Canada in March? |
Hi. I'm an Australian going on vacation to Canada in March. What can I expect as far as the weather goes? Additional Details Sorry, I should have mentioned where abouts I was going - Toronto and Calgary. I would like to see snow someday because I have never seen it before but I imagine the snow would be all cleared up by then. This will be my first time visiting Canada but if I like it I might like to go back in winter. |

Canada is a huge country depends on where you are going....by March and April, spring's heels are firmly dug in in Vancouver and the west coast....nevertheless, the ski season in Whistler is still going strong....elsewhere in the country, the chill of winter is disappearing but weather can be unpredictable so be prepared for a variety of weather
Edit:Toronto weather in March, average high is 38.7° F low is 22.5° F and the average precipitation is 2.20 in
and Calgary average high 38.0° F low 17.0° F and precipitation 0.60 in |

Post your question again with the city you are visiting and it will be much easier to give you advice. The weather is very different from coast to coast. |

The weather in Toronto and most east-coast cities in early March will likely be slushy above-zero celsius days with possible snow or drops in temperature overnight.
In Calgary, their is a saying: If you do not like the weather, wait ten minutes. They get strange weather due to the Rocky Mountain chain being in the way. You may get a foot of snow in the morning in March, and then the sun will come out, the temperature will rise ten degrees, and the snow will all melt away.
The March weather here in Canada (except perhaps in British Columbia) is pretty much unpredictable, as you could have a snowstorm or a nice warm sunny day.
I would recommend bringing hiking boots, and have clothes that you can layer, such as t-shirt, sweater, spring jacket. If you find it too cold, you can usually find a store selling their end of season stock of toques, scarves, and gloves in March. (Zellers, The Bay, Sears)
And ignore the Australian travel advisory (mentioned below) about Canada. We have not had any terrorist events here, the avalanche warnings are really only for if you are at one of the ski hills like Lake Louise or Whistler, and March is certainly not our dry season so forest fires are not a major concern. |

If you want to see snow in Canada in March, it is no problem. You might need to change your travel plans a little though. If you visit Newfoundland, Labrador, Nunavut, Yukon, or Northwest Territories in March you will be sure to see snow. You might even see snow in March if you can take a driving trip to Northern Ontario or Northern Alberta. |

Canada is the second largest country in the world. From coast to coast to coast, weather varies in March.
In Toronto, it is about 3 or 4 deg. C., while Calgary experiences some of the milder weather and unpredictable Chinook phenomenon when it can be as high as 12 to 14 deg C/ Come prepared for a cold weather in March. You can still see snow in some northern sections of Ontario.
For most part, the tapping of Maple Sugar will be over. Far north, where the snow is still there (Quebec north). |
