What ID is required for child under 18 traveling to Canada with parent?

You need both of your birth certificates and SS cards, and you need your DL. In addition, you'll need a notorized letter from the other parent giving you permission to cross the boarder with the child, even if you're still married.

Land/Sea Travel
Beginning January 31, 2008, the United States will end the practice of accepting oral declarations of citizenship at the border.

U.S. citizens ages 19 and older must present documentation that proves both identity and citizenship. Identification documents must include a photo, name and date of birth. View the complete list of acceptable documents at CBP.gov for land travel and sea travel.
Children ages 18 and under will only be required to present proof of citizenship, such as a birth certificate.
U.S. citizens can also apply for a U.S. Passport Card, which facilitates entry and expedites document processing at U.S. land and sea ports-of-entry when arriving from Canada, Mexico, the Caribbean and Bermuda. The card may not be used to travel by air. Otherwise, it carries the rights and privileges of the U.S. passport book and is adjudicated to the exact same standards.

The below website has hyperlinks for other situations, including 1 parent taking a child.

I am a single mom travelling from the US to Quebec in 11 days, according to the Canadian Consulate, you will need a birth certificate for you and your child( THIS is NOT optional), your drivers license, and they HIGHLY suggest (some border officers will not grant entry without it ) a letter from your childs other parent, that states they give permission for you to take the child into Canada, with the destination listed, dates, and contact information for the absent parent ie, address and phone number. They also suggest that the letter be notarized, I also carry a copy of my ex's license, Since we are driving to Niagara Falls and then travelling ViaRail from Niagara falls to Ottawa, I also have the copies of the train tickets for travel as well. The more you have the better, and faster your crossing will be, I am crossing 2hrs before our train leaves to ensure enough time barring any problems. Canada is stricter then the US is, I have not had trouble crossing the border for the day with just my sons birth certificate, we live 30 min from Niagara Falls, but since we are going for a week I am getting the letter as well. If you are not married and have a custody agreement you may want to take that too, I unfortunately do not have those documents.

Answer for the person above, a social security card cannot be used in place of a birth certificate if you go to the city clerk office where your child was born you can get an official copy of their birth certificate usually right away, it took five minutes and $10 to get a copy of my sons.

SAME Question --- with a twist.. (never use these answer things so no idea what I am doing here)

X88X and nikki: i cannot find one birth cert for one of my five kids. can I use his soc securtiy card? (my wife and I have passports and the other kids have birth certs).

HELP

Brain Babe
You will need a passport for everyone...it is not true that you need a letter from other parent...that issue is addressed when the passport (USA) is first issued.

We both took our children in together to apply for passports. We learned that if only one of us had taken our kids to apply, THEN the letter, notarized would have been required.

x88x
No passport is needed yet... that law is not in effect yet. All you need is a license or state i.d. and a birth certificate. A social security card cannot be used in place of the birth cert.

passport. so you need your social security number and your driver's license/permit if you have one and your birth certificate.

Alexandra
- A valid passport

**Optional but good to have on hand.

- A birth certificate (again, this is optional)

- a notarized affidavit from the other parent (if you are only traveling with one of the two) stating that they are fully aware of and consent to, your out of country travels with this particular parent. ( again, optional)

SUE
A passport. I'm pretty sure everyone needs a passport to cross the border, now.

And, if the child is going with only one parent, they probably need permission from the other one.

if you are flying into canada they will need a passpot.
If you are driving and with both parents just birth certificate.
If you are travelling either way with only one parent you will also need the follow
a) a death certificate of the other parent (a copy is fine)
OR
b) a notorized letter from the other parent giving permission to travel with the child.

Tina
Both yours and childs passport and letter from other parent if you are the only one going giving permission to take child out of contry

princess
a passport but take your social security card as well just in case.
