What about the character of the Canadian in the different areas? |
I'm curious about the difference of character, of culture, of mentality of Canadians, from west to east Canada, and what about Quebec? What is the behavior of Canadians towards french people?
And I take a particular interest in Winnipeg...If you know this city, and how are people there...Thanks. |

There are many stereotypes of Canadians, and you will see these on TV and in movies. The truth is that not everyone will have the same culture, speech pattern, or character in Canada, even if it is only because the country covers so much area.
For example, the show "Royal Canadian Air Farce" pokes fun at the differences between Canadians from the maritimes, out west, and from Quebec.
If you want to see a funny way of looking at the differences between English Canada and French Quebec culture, rent or buy the movie "Bon Cop Bad Cop". Many of the stereotypes in there people will recognize as being distinctly a Toronto or Montreal thing.
Below are my own personal observations or opinions towards the rest of Canada. Please don't take it as a know-all guide...
Maritimers are hardworking people who live in a very difficult part of the country. They speak English, but in some parts the people there have a thick accent that makes it difficult to understand them.
Quebecers are very proud of their French heritage and they love a good party. There are two types of Quebecer...there is the French Canadian, and there is the Quebecois. The Quebecois tend to be more militant, more extreme and want to do anything they can to help Quebec separate so they can form their own country. Both have strong family values and are good buddies to go drinking with.
In Ontario, you have the English counterparts to the Quebecers, except they tend to party a little more under control. Toronto is the most American of all our Canadian cities, and they seem heavily influenced by the proximity to New York State, Ohio, and Illinois.
Out west, we have prairie farmers, ranchers, and what I like to refer to as "good ole boys" that put in a hard days work and then like to go home and kick back. It is a much more relaxed and neighbourly community on the prairies.
British Columbia is the "California" section of Canada. They have better weather, a lot of people are concerned with looks and health, and they seem to live more on the edge than any other Canadians. Only the Quebecers rival them in party atmosphere. |

Having lived in different regions of Canada and visited most others I would have to say that you can find people of all social and political stripes almost anywhere. If you are looking for generalizations which might have a hint of truth I can give you some of the stereotypes:
The west tends to be more right wing/conservative, particularly Alberta which is a bit like our version of Texas. Winnipeg is almost between the East and West and therefore a bit schizoid. There is a strong history of liberal/socialist politics (eg. Winnipeg General Strike) but a deep vein of conservatism. Ontario is the home of the central government and Toronto is the self-proclaimed centre of the Universe (vis. sign on the wall of the Eaton Centre). Hating Toronto is one thing that unites the country, but Toronto can't figure out why.
Quebec is very european, especially old Quebec City and old Montreal, but the relationship between Qebec and TROC (aka the rest of Canada) tends to be strained much of the time. The Atlantic provinces have a reputation for friendliness in the face of chronic financial hardship and a love of music and good times. The typical northerner is a rugged individualist who loves the land and hates crowds.
If you travel around Canada you can probably find someone to fit all of the above stereotypes, but you will find many more people who can not be neatly pigeon-holed.
There are friendly people throughout Canada (not all, of course) and the best thing you can do is come experience us for yourself. |

There is no way you can generalize the character of a Canadian. The only truth is we are unique. |

We are one big happy family.
Its a very diverse culture and we like it the way it is.
Sure we have a few bad ones but for the most part, Canadians are very nice and accepting. |

Left Coast Liberal
 |
The west = More laid back, easy going, and less fast-paced.
Central= fast paced, business-like mentality
East coast= same as the west. |

West coast (BC) is very laid back and while tend to vote conservative can be very socialist. lets just say they have a Marijuana Party and a Party Party. and can be quite proud of the high quality BC Bud. generally well off, into nature, care about environment. hates toronto and edmonton with passion
Westcoat (Alberta) also laid back and are conservative. very wealthy these days due to strong conservative government in past and oil. hates toronto and liberals.
Central (SASK, MAN) farmers. hard workers. nice people
East (Ontario): fast paced, hard workers, can be quite pretentious. think they are center of the universe, or at least canada. hated by all of canada
Quebec: can be slightly european, some are quite militant about wanting to leave canada but most just want to make sure the french are properly represented. nice people. can be rude to those they think are too american.
Maritimes: nicest people, hard workers, funny accent, friendly, also p.o.'d at toronto (ontario) for getting all the attention. and forgetting they exist. |
