You will need a passport now crossing the international border of course.

There are lots of things to do in Vancouver.
There are lots of fine dining and nightclubs downtown in the Robson & Granville area.

There are also a lot of outdoorsy stuff to do if you guys are into that like walking/biking/rollerblading along the sea wall, there are lots of beaches, especially nice ones at Stanley Park. There is the Capillano Suspension Bridge, aquarium, zoo. Try finding a travel brochure guide on things to do.

Oh yah in the summer there is the fireworks display the "Festival of Lights" which is a huge attraction.

Take the on and off trolly and get off at each chance. Have lunch at Granville Island. Wander around Stanley Park. Book a suite at the funky old Sylvia Hotel.. It is cheap. It is under the radar for the travel agents.
You will need passports to get into the country. Birth certificates for little kids are usually okay. But you have to have something.

You're going to be around when it will most likely be raining. If you are with your family I suggest the Vancouver Aquarium, Science World (I think it's called the Telus Sphere or something like that now but if you ask anyone around here they'll know what you mean if you call it Science World) and go to a movie at the IMAX theater at Canada Place.

I don't think you'll need passports but my understanding is those rules are changing. I would get them just to be safe.

There are loads of things you can do in Vancouver. The first thing that comes to mind are the mountains. However, it's awesome here. The posts above mind are great... there is also Stanley Park. Enjoy.

I don't know about the best time...I went in April and it was cool, with rain most days, but some sunny...I imagine it is similar in the fall, but I'm not sure.

You don't need passports as Americans (as of yet, but I think you will in 2008?) just a birth certificate AND a valid photo ID (for some people, I think it is easier to just get a passport.)

Things to do: definitely enjoy some Indian food in the Indian section of town, take a stroll down Commercial Ave (with lots of shops, etc.) and a few blocks toward the downtown from Commercial (you might have to look it up when you arrive) is the MOST AWESOME ICE CREAM/GELATO STORE EVER! It had something like 250 flavors (including about 50 w/o dairy) and is open into the evening.

After you have any flavor of ice cream your heart desires, you can pretty much just relax and walk around the waterfront and feel happy. But I'd definitely also recommend a stroll through Stanley park: huge coastal trees, black squirrels and lots of little paths here and there. Very sweet.

If you are American citizens, you don't need passports, just good identification that shows you are US citizens. George Bush is pushing for passports for everyone entering the US, even Canadians, and if that happens, it will probably be adopted simultaneously by both countries. But that hasn't happened yet.
Mid September is a wonderful time to visit. Weather is warm, but not too hot, and the autumn rains haven't started yet.
Cool things to do, especially with kids, include visiting Science World (a hands on Science museum) and the Maritime Museum, and the Train museum on Granville Island. There's the Lynn Canyon adventure, in North Vancouver, with a tree top walk and a 230 foot high suspension bridge.
