The Canadian school that is most often compared to an American Ivy League School is McGill University in Montreal. McGill has the well known nickname as "The Harvard of Canada." McGill has a diverse student body and a history of notable alumni and professors (among these include former professor and Nobel Laureate Ernest Rutherford). Recently, McGill has been rank by a London magazine as the 21st best university in the world, beating such schools as NYU and UCLA.
Other Canadian schools that rank "up there" with McGill are the University of Toronto and the University of British Columbia. |

I agree with CanProf. Give us some idea of the type of studies you're interested in. I could provide comments on the University of Guelph, if you were interested in agricultural science, animal science and medicine, economics, horticulture, child and family science, ... others. |

Depending on what area of study you're looking for. You can check out the Maclean's university ranking. For a big university with post-grad studies and research focus, the top 5 are: McGill, Queen's, UofT, UBC, and Western. McGill (Montreal) and UofT (Toronto) both have their main campus in the middle of the city and your campus life is mixed with city life. Queen's (Kingston) and Western (London) are located in a smaller city which makes it a college-town. UBC (Vancouver) is located in a major city but its campus is secluded enough to have a student campus life, yet you're literally a hop away from the happenings of downtown city life. |

There is only one Canadian university which has the financial resources to be right up there with the upper tier of US schools and that is Toronto. Some of the older universities like McGill and Queen's (maybe Dalhousie in this category too) are ivy league in their own minds but are simply good schools with, by Canadian standards, a lot of history. Your question though could produce some more focussed answers if you could be a bit more specific about what you are looking for and what specific programme(s) interest you. |
