CN Tower and The Rogers Centre aka The Sky Dome, the tallest free standing structure and the World's first retractable Domed Stadium.

Ontario Place Island Complex

Toronto Zoo

Casa Loma. Eaton Centre, The Esplanade, Ontario Science Centre,

St. Paul's Bascilica, Wander through the University of Toronto, The Harbour Front, take a ferry to one of the Islands and enjoy the day.

Royal Ontario Museum, Art Gallery of Ontario, both which have undergone major expansions.

Canon Theatre, Royal Alexandra Theatre and Princess of Wales Theatre.

Winter Garden Theatre complex, two stage theatres one on top of the other, and the Winter Garden interior is stunning in the garden decor,

Church Street, the gay district

BCE Place, architecture inside is like a modern gothic cathedral made of glass.

Union Station, The Royal York Hotel

First of all, go to any TTC subway station and buy an All Day Pass, only $8.50 good for 2 adults and I think 3 kids. Hop on and off any streetcar, subway or bus as many times as you want in a single day. Not to many North American cities have street cars, go for a ride anywhere.

There's no one single thing, as phoneguy955 said, Kensington Market - go on a Sunday, mid-day. Great place to people watch. While in Kensington make sure you have some empanadas from Jumbo Empanada, or even better, go into the Perola's grocery and get cooked to order pupusas ($2.50 ea.) WELL worth the wait. Kensington is full of unique shopping opportunities, check out Courage My Love and all the other fun stores.

The Distillery District, the old Gooderham and Worts Distillery, built in the 1830s is a must see, especially if you like historical buildings. There are galleries, shopping(expensive) and often there are events going on, Nip into the Mill Street Brew Pub for some great craft beers.

For the best street walking/non-corporate shopping start at Spadina and walk west on Queen West. Lots of used record stores, independent designer cloths, arts and crafts, vintage furnishings, toy stores. Walk all the way to 893 Queen West and treat yourself to the best damn fish in chips in the city at Chippy's.

Back to street cars, if your in Kensington, walk to the north edge of the market up to College street. Take the College street car through Little Italy and on all the way to the last stop, High Park - maybe a half hour ride? Get off the street car and walk through Toronto's biggest park. After you've seen enough you could walk to the North entrance of the park and hop on the subway at High Park station. Head east to go back towards downtown.

If you want to spent a whole day in one area, take the ferry across to the Toronto Islands. Pack a lunch and bring lots of water - there are numerous places to get some but there expensive and mostly not very good (except for one, but I'll get to that). You could go to the nude beach at one end (by the island airport) Centre Island is a children's theme park that's fun to walk through even if the rides are lame, and well, for kids. As well Centre Island has the clothed beach. The east side is populated by the Islanders, the few lucky Torontonians that have leased land from the city and live year round in cool little cottages. Didn't pack a lunch, thirsty for a cold pint, ask directions to the Rectory CafÃ©. Sit on the patio and enjoy the view.

I really could go on, there is the Beaches, Little India at Gerrard and Coxwell, Roncesvalles Village (where I live, yay), Museums, CityTV/ Much Music, The Annex, Honest Ed's .... blah, blah, blah. Can ya tell I love my city. Anyway, that should get you started. Drop me an email if you want more info.

CN tower, Queen Street for nightlife, Yonge St. They have a huge underground mall too. Kensington Market. All of this stuff is within walking distance.
