In BC, I would divide the trip between Vancouver and Whistler. Most people only think of Whistler as a winter destination, but there's more to do there in summer than winter. And the hotel prices, surprisingly, are cheaper than ski season.
You won't need to rent a car either. You could just take the bus or train up. Whistler is a pedestrian community. Lots of activity and dining. You mentioned history. There's some with the native peoples. So maybe a night or two for a romantic outdoorsy experience and then focus on culture and history in Vancouver. You have modern, native, Asian cultures.
I'm also a fan of Banff. I know lots of people claim it's over-crowded, but the scenery up there, with Lake Louise and Jasper are adjective depleting.
BUT, why not consider Quebec City? It's the only walled city in North America. It's a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It's French, so you have the culture and cuisine. It's pretty and historic. You'll have cool shopping, fun nightlife, and plenty of culture and music. And it's safe. I think of it as Europe without the jetlag.
Otherwise, I'd look to the east coast, maybe Halifax, which is a pretty seaside city. Oh and this July they're hosting the tall ships. It's one of the oldest cities on the continent, has lots of museums and galleries, plenty of little clubs and pubs with live music, good restaurants. It's also got the largest Buddhist community in North America and seven universities in a city of 360,000. |

Vancouver Island, Victoria, Tofino etc
Follow the coastline of Washington, Oregon and California, but to do it properly you will need more than a week.
Banff
Jasper
you have a lot of choices in the Western Provinces and States. You do not say how much time you have??
if you have a week I would do the Island, Victoria and check out the waterfront, Dallas Road, Point Pleasant park, Butchart Gardens, Goldstream Park, Thetis Lake etc, and then up the island to Tofino, Port Alberni, Ucluelet, Parksville, Qualicum Beach, Campbell River, Chemanius etc whatever time allows for your drive. |

A quintessential Canadian experience would be being in Regina on the evenlng of July 1 for the first of the summer's "Sunset Ceremonies" at the spiritual home of the RCMP at "Depot" Division in the west end of Regina. This is a regimental military event that is very colourful and evocative. Be there around 6.15 or 6.30 p.m. If you come earlier, then you can tour the new RCMP Heritage Centre. Later that night, there will be fireworks over Regina's Wascana Lake. See if you can catch a Saskatchewan Roughriders football game in Regina, too. |
