Depends what you're into. I travelled around New Foundland for about 3 months. St. John's was okay, it's very small compared other cities, I did a little clubbing. My favorite places were the tiny little towns. I think the charm of New Foundland isn't what you see, it is the people that you meet. I spent a good part of my time in Bonavista, Elliston, Clarenville areas about 4 hours north of St. John's on the coast. Go in the summer, unless you want to expereince the winter storms.
Check out

There are also some very significant archeological sites if you are interested on the north coasts.
Also check out the tourism Elliston website- It's the rootcellar capital of the world, they also have an annual puffin festival. Email Cal he'll give you a personal tour of the area.

well it really depends. If you wanna go to the actual island i would say go visit Bell Island, Saint Johns or Torbay. If you wanna go to Labrador then Labrador city and Wabush are the best places to go.
I am a real newfie so these are where i would go.
good luck

I'd have to say Gros Morne Park. Also, if you do go to St. John's you must go to George St. and get "Screeched In". Have fun. |

Well, St. John's is a must--especially George Street. Other than that, L'Anse aux Meadows is nice and Gros Morne National Park is absolutely amazing. If you want a really unique experience, one that you may not find in any of the tourism guides, go up to the northeast coast to see Twilliingate, then go back and take the ferry to Fogo Island and Change Islands. Fogo and Change Islands aren't really well known and are almost always overlooked by people recommending tourist destinations, but they are some of the most beautiful places I've ever seen, especially Change Islands. |

Deffinitly go to St Johns, it is a great city, while you are there go to Signal Hill, and Cape Spear. Cape Spear at sunset is fabulous. Make sure to go to George St!! Bay Bulls is a great place to go on a whale watching tour, and it is a smaller town, about 30 mins from St Johns. When travelling around through the smaller towns, be sure to check out the little museums that each one has detailing the history of that village, they are great, and each town has one. When you are going whale watching, be sure that the one you are on will take you around Bird Rock, because that is pretty cool. Have a blast, and don't forget to get 'Screeched In"!!!!!!! |

One of the best things I ever did when I travelled to St John's was to get up at 4:30 a.m., grab a Tim Hortons just off Water Street, then head up to Signal Hill to watch the sun come up and the iceburgs float by. We then went on a whale watching tour (chose O'Briens.....they know what they're doing and have the best down east singing voices in Canada). We drifted beside two adult and a baby whale for an hour. |

* Burgeo Sandbanks (white sand; about 8 beaches; islands in the distance; great for kayaking)
* Bird Rock (Cormorants! Surprisingly noisy!)
* Codroy Valley and Humber Valley (west coast; nice mountains; great fresh food in late summer; friendly people)
* Dildo Run Prov. Park (New World Island, Notre Dame Bay)
* Boyd's Cove (Beothuck site - very emotional - bronze statue of the last known Beothuck!!!)
* Main River (White Bay; fun salmon fishing!!! Wild river!!!)
* Gros Morne National Park (rare World Heritage site of Tablelands - remarkable!!! Orange rocks, nothing grows on it - like you're on Mars!!!) |

If you really like to come try the early summer months, on the east coast this is when you get to see the icebergs. Especially around Notre Dame Bay area. Then there's Gros Mourne and Beothuk Park. And Don't Forget about the Salmon Festival (Huge outdoor Concert). St. John's Famous George Street (Most Bars Per Capita in the world).
Here's some sites to help. |

Check out Tickle Bay. That area is renowned for a giant squid with eight-foot long arms which appeared on the beach one day, the "Tickle Bay Monster". I gather that giant squid has become a very important part of the local culture, though I don't know what the calamari is like... |
