Too many school shootings on the Island of Montreal?!?

I've only ever heard of the Ecole Polytechnique shooting back in December 1989 (I was a student at the University of Montreal at the time - Pavillon Jean-Brillant) and I was on my way home from there when this whole unspeakable tragedy occurred!

And the other shooting was at Dawson College a year or two ago, correct?

Where else have we had school shootings here?!?

Montreal - a rich history??? This city is only three centuries old, lol!

This dude has obviously never set foot in Europe!

Anyways, I absolutely adore Montreal!

It is my beloved hometown, I grew up here and I'm totally biased, I know, but I never let anyone talk sh*t about my mistress!

PROS:

Montreal is one helluva beautiful cosmopolitan city, very diverse, multi-cultural, has lots to offer all year round (summer and winter festivals, one huge amusement park run by Six Flags located just South of the island, countless parks and green areas, etc.) as far as social AND cultural activities are concerned, lots of interesting museums to visit (Musée des Beaux-Arts/Museum of Fine Arts) and gorgeous art galleries to admire and buy paintings (oil & water color) and/or sculptures from (especially in the Old Montreal), hundreds of delicious and mouth-watering ethnic restaurants to eat at all over the city, shopping malls that are out of this world, not to mention the famous underground city, an amazing nightlife and exciting, cool and trendy nightclubs and bars, and let's not forget the Mont-Royal, a mountain sat right in the middle of the city, can you imagine? We also enjoy four different seasons every year, which you can't always get everywhere, and several superb avenues, boulevards and streets such as Avenue Mont-Royal, Boulevard Saint-Laurent, Saint-Denis Street and Sainte-Catherine Street!

There are also many great schools and reputable universities scattered all over the town and we also offer and enjoy a rich culture and an interesting architecture and urban infrastructure too!

Need I say more?

CONS:

Winters can be a little bit rough but still beautiful and if you enjoy winter sports and activities and a lot of snow, you will absolutely love living here and that's a guarantee!

Montreal is a predominantly French speaking city so if you don't speak a word of it, you won't enjoy it as much as if you were fluent, of course! But you can get by speaking solely English, if you aren't any good at learning foreign languages. I would strongly recommend learning French though for your own sake more than anything!

If you're thinking of moving to Montreal in the near future, I wish you all the very best!

Good luck!

PROS:
- Rich history (city is 366 years old)
- Great food
- Safe city relative to its size
- Good employment opportunities
- Lots of parks, bike paths, and an excellent safe subway system
- No dangerous animals in general, such as posionous snakes or insects
- Great events all year, such as summer and winter festivals, pro hockey, football, and soccer teams.

CONS:
- weather (cold and snowy in Jan/Feb, hot and humid in July/Aug)
- The French/English controversy keeps coming up
- Taxes, rent, and gas prices are all high. (6% federal tax, 7% provincial tax, and gas is $1.20 per litre or roughly $4.80 per gallon)
- Traffic, morning and evening commutes are bad if you live off island and drive a car
- Infrastructure - roads are full of potholes from using so much salt in winter and some of the water pipes burst each year because the infrastructure needs a major overhaul. We even had an overpass collapse because of this.

As for the school shootings someone else mentioned, we have had two serious events at schools and those are isolated incidents that happened 15 years apart. Do a search for "Marc Lepine 1989" and "Kimveer Gill 2006" for more info on these shootings.

pro: nice clean air and big city with low crime, nice buildings, nice parks, certain uniqueness

cons: you have to speak french, not so many good stores, housing isn't cheap, cold in winter, very hot in summer...

redhotboxsoxfan
Winter are tough of course some people like that. The city has a good reputation for being a fun safe place for people to visit. I hear the money is good there at this time anyway.

Pros... hockey town Cons...too many Canadiens

John M
Pro:
Lot's of History and culture which makes for a great balanced city. English is very easy to speak in the actual city itself. The People. There is a good China Town. There is a ton of style. The women are gorgeous...I guess the guys are too(?). Smoked meat. Montreal Bagels.

Cons:
All signs are in French, so if you don't read French it's like being illiterate...you can get used to it though.. It is HOLY C*R*A*P* cold in the winter. If you run into separatists you'll begin to hate everything about the beautiful city. You can't turn right on a red stop light. Traffic.

It is a great city...and not too big but it sure seems that way.

There are at least two cons. The first, the weather is not good. The second, there are lots of school shootouts. The positives, firstly, it is beautiful. Secondly, it has good hockey team. Other than that, it bothers me.
