It depends where. In downtown Vancouver or in the more 'downtown' ish areas, it's scary because there are lots of druggies and criminals. however in the outskirts, it's pretty nice (as long as you have an alarm system ;) ) there are lots of parks, and schools, and friendly people. i love it! (however i moved out of vancouver a year ago) but i go back to visit lots. there are SOOO many malls and great places to shop. more people are going organic and more stores are supplying organic needs. so it's great! i loove vancouver and always will. :)

Vancouver is a great city. The first thing you'll notice here is that there are many many different cultures that live in Vancouver. the biggest populations are Indian and Chinese but there are also big Korean, Filipino, and African populations here as well. Another thing you'll notice about Vancouver is our good friend called RAIN. Vancouver is famous for the rain. The nice thing about Vancouver though is that even though it rains for six - seven months straight through the winter, it never gets cold here. You never need anything more than a fleece walking around in the winter. It only snows once or twice during the winter so don't be afraid of cold weather. The summers in Vancouver are awesome. It doesn't get too hot in vancouver during the summer months and its mostly sunny the entire summer. There are many great festivals that happen in vancouver during the summer as well. Services in vancouver are great. There's lots of transit within the city and there are many great ways toc commute without a car from farther districts. Personally, i take the bus everyday and i never have to wait more than ten minutes for a bus. There are also many awesome things to see close to vancouver. BC is a vacation province and most of the people who live here take vacations within the province. I love living in vancouver. Everyone here is friendly and there isn't much crime. I would highly reccomend vancouver for moving here.

Good environmental of living, people are friendly, food are multiple, good natural scenery, both human being & pets heaven, many parks, can do lots of outdoor activities,it's warm & not cold than other province in CA, convenient transportations, can meet many immigration in Vancouver B.C ,multiple society, well welfare ,etc.........

compare with many other city in other country, living in Vancouver is really good.

Well, I live in Ontario, and supposedly it is one of the nicest places to live with lots of job oppurtunities. It it supposed to be quite costly to live there though.

Vancouver is:
-one of the most beautiful cities in North American--probably amongst the top in the world
-the most sophisticated west coast city north of San Francisco
-unsuprisingly, an expensive place to live

Since you mention that you're retired, you might think about Victoria. It might be an easier city to integrate into (many other retirees and activities). Victoria is really no less expensive than Vancouver, however. The weather is better though (half the rainfall of Vancouver).

its probably the most expensive place to live in across canada. its definitely a great place to live though.very multicultural if you dont mind.

I live in Vancouver and it's really nice here. The weather varies a lot but it's usually not too hot and not too cold.

Houses/apartments/condos are very expensive -- I'd say even a new condo could be $500,000+ (depending on how fancy it is).

Of course, it has its fair share of druggies and thugs, but it's not everyday you run into someone like that. If you avoid those places (mostly in areas of Downtown), then you should be fine.

The suburb-y areas are nice to live. It's pretty quiet and peaceful. But if you like some noise, then there are some nicer areas in Downtown (not all of Downtown is full of bad people), but the condos/apartments are very $$$.

There's good shopping all around and places you can visit when you have time. Since you're retired, you can wander around and go to places like Stanley Park (I think some parts are still closed due to bad weather some many months ago), PNE, Granville Island, shopping Downtown, and much more.

You can't find another city with mountains on one side, the ocean on another, and the city on yet another side.

I am from Australia and lived in the west end in downtown Vancouver for 1 year and it was amazing. If you are a bit older try living out in burnaby or Cloverdale, those areas are nice. If you have the money the northern shore is nice too.

My dream is to live in Vancouver. If you have the opportunity to move there, DO IT!!

Although there is a rather high cost of living there...and like all cities, it has it's less-than-wonderful areas. Definitely take the time to scope out all the different areas of the city and find the one that's best for you.

I don't know much about the economics, but you need to be tolerant of a very diverse population (large Asian and Indian populations, among others), and not mind really awful rush hour traffic (it's as bad as Seattle's).

why Canada is so strange ?
are you billionaire?

I know it's suppose to be one of the best cities in the world to live in, but personally, I hate it. And i don't live in the suburbs either, I live in the west side.

It rains...A LOT. I find it really depressing, and find the winter months excruciatingly depressing. The school system in the city of Vancouver (I am not talking about the suburbs) is HORRIBLE. The schools aren't in good condition, and get basically no funding. I find Vancouver to ethnic, not to be racist, but it's not white enough.

The only good things I find are the fact that it's very clean and there is good food.
