In the Maritime Provinces, you will get a nice two bedroom apartment for that amount. Not fancy, but good. On the other hand, you could also get a mortgage on a bunglalow.

It depends on which city you are referring to. The cost of living varies depending on which part of the country e.g. Vancouver is very expensive so don't think you would get much more than what you are paying for in L.A., in London & Toronto you might be able to find a one bedroom basement apartment for that & possibly in Alberta as well.

Check listings online to get a more accurate idea or phone a real estate agent in whatever city you are planning to move to. If you are a student planning on going to school here the university will have available housing listed on their websites.

Here in Thunder Bay, ON, that's about what I pay for a very spacious 3 bedroom apartment, newly renovated with a big bathroom and a balcony. But this town is not exactly booming.

In Montreal (Verdun area), you can get a two bedroom apartment for CAD$625. On the other hand, a bachelor in NDG or Westmount area might be almost that much.

Housing costs in Canada depends on where you live. It would be the equivalent to living in Monterrey Park vs Belair. Where you choose depends on what neighborhood you want to live in and how much of a commute you are comfortable with.

Check out the Canada Rental Listings at the site below. It may give you an idea of the prices in various Canadian cities.

In downtown Toronto, a cardboard shack near city hall
Downtown Ottawa a hall closet no bathroom
Vancouver a grate with steam

It will get you a room in the lower east side of Vancouver aka known as "skid row". In the interior it would get you a room in a transient hotel, same scenario - Kamloops, Kelowna, Vernon, etc forget it. There is one apartment for rent in the newspaper in Kamloops the last time I checked. (200,000 pop approx)

In small town Saskatchewan and places like Princeton BC you could do better. The Maritime provinces I suppose.

You probably wont find a thing in any city in Canada unless you really dont care what kind of neighbourhood you live in, and dont expect much. Someone said Montreal, but what kind of neighbourhood is that? I dont know Montreal.

All depends what city and what area of that city.

$625 USD = $647 CDN. (If that helps)

Smaller towns, like the ones I live around you can get quite a nice 2 bedroom, hard wood floors, balcony, all inclusive (heat, hydro, water, basic cable, parking) for $725 a month.

Some bachelors around here go anywhere from $300 - $500.

Places like Ottawa are getting better for rent. When I was thinking about moving there we found a good 2 bedroom in a good area for $650. Then there's the "dingy" places in Ottawa which a quite cheaper. But its really not a neighbour you'd probably want to live in.

Toronto is ridiculus for rent.

I used to live in Peterborough, Ontario and that place is actually bad for rent. I found everything in the city was cheap (groceries, cigarettes) but the rent was very high. For a good 2 bedroom we were looking at paying $850 - $950 a month PLUS parking. We ended up finding a 2 bedroom basement apartment for $800.

You would have to find a room mate in order to make $625 work in Calgary. Probably two actually.

There is nothing available anywhere here for that.

It depends where in Canada you want to live.

If you want to live in a major city, I.E. Vancouver, Toronto, or Montreal, you will not get much.
If you choose a smaller more urban area, you may find something quite nice and comfortable. It will not be a penthouse, but clean and livable.

the information you have provided as to where you might like to live, puts you in the high rent districts of Canada.
$625.00 will not go a long way

I think you should live in Ontario, maybe an hour from Toronto.
It's definately cheaper to live. Where I live, you can get a two bedroom apartment for $500 a month.
