There are many countries that have had trouble getting along with Canada in recent times, as well as over the years. However, when I say we don't get along, it means more like they have had a disagreement with us and the issue had to be raised at the world court or through the United Nations.
But when I say "trouble getting along", I don't mean that we went to war or we/they imposed sanctions and such. It was something that simply we both could not agree on and so we sought a mediator.
Here are a few examples:
Canada and the US have been upset at each other in recent times because of softwood lumber. USA imposed duty on Canada's lumber deemed by the world court to be in violation of NAFTA.
When Canada did not give all of its support to President Bush regarding the war in Iraq, The US government cancelled several meetings with our politicians, and ignored our requests for discussions on various other topics that had been scheduled.
Various nations have been sending ships into the Arctic, and more specifically, into regions that were traditionally considered sovereign waters of Canada. The two biggest incidents involved USA sending warships into the area without advising Canada, and Denmark landing a crew on disputed Hans Island and planting their flag (as was traditionally done by explorers in the 1700's to claim land).
Spain became very upset in 1995 when one of their fishing trawlers was boarded by Canadian Coast Guard and seized for illegal turbot fishing. More recently, in 2004 two Portugese ships were recalled to their home country when Canada made complaints about illegal cod fishing. (The overfishing of the Grand Banks by Spanish, Russian, and Portugese trawlers have placed many of the fish in that area on the endangered species or restricted species lists.)
But I would say that most of these disagreements were or are being resolved through diplomacy, not through war or violence. |
