What did Canadians think of last night's Canadian election debate (not the one in the states)? |
I'm talking about the debate that was first done in French and now was redone in English.
Who did better? I couldn't watch it because
1) In the USA, I don't think they showed it on television, but I may have been able to catch it on cbc.ca internet stream but my computer was acting too slow.
2) I was glued to the Joe Biden VS Sarah Palin Vice Presidential debate.
Who did better on the Canadian debate? Was this Dion against Harper? |

In the Canadian debate, I thought Jack Layton of the NDP and Elizabeth May of the Green party were most impressive, yet neither one has a shot at actually becoming prime minister. There were five party leaders altogether in the debate, including Gilles Duceppe of the Bloc Quebecois, but he couldn't become prime minister in a billion years since his party only represents Quebec. Harper and Dion are the only ones likely to win, and they both stank horribly. Dion actually has very good ideas but his personal style is so weak, you just feel sorry for him. Harper is like a confident block of wood. He seems dependable on the surface, but there's not much there. His economic policies are eerily similar to John McCains, except he articulates the details a bit as if Canadians are assumed to have brains larger than peas.
Although it surprised me, I actually found the Canadian debate much more entertaining. It's fun to watch our leaders shout at each other and tear each other down because they care about real issues, as compared to the American VP debate where I'm not sure exactly what Palin said the entire time beyond vague republican platitudes, and I think she said "mavericks" about 20 times, sigh. Biden seemed much more intelligent, but dry and polite.
A major difference is, because in Canada we have a Parlimentary system of goverment where every party that has representitives elected (a bit like American senators, but they're called Members of Parliment) also has a party leader representing them in Parliment. Except for May who's Green party doesn't have any seats yet, these guys are all incumbent party leaders who are used to arguing with each other all the time.
You can watch at least the first part of the debate, on the economy, on Youtube and see what you think for yourself.

Harper needs to be more vocal, but did ok.
Layton spent the whole debate pointing his finder, which was irritating.
Dion is uptight and whiny.
May is really annoying, she cut people off left and right, and kept claiming everything and everyone were "frauds".
Duceppe just makes me laugh. Such a waste of taxpayer's money. 17 years of that party for what???
In the end, it was pretty uneventful. |

Harper was smug and doesn't think Canadians are worried about jobs and economy. He presented no real point, instead wasted 2 hours attacking Dion.
Stephan Dion was unable to articulate anything.
Elizabeth May, made sense at times but was just regurgitating studies she has read and really presenting no original ideology. She also refused to play by the rules.
Jack Layton Carried on like a petulant child.
Gilles Duceppe actually made sense, however he has no business being separatist running in a federal election.
All it did was affirm who I am not going to vote for. |

dion, harper got ripped at and i dont think he did well over all, and i use to really like him, the ndp and green party were very good, new repect for those parties after this and dion agree with most of what they said. |

You can watch the full french debate here: http://elections.radio-canada.ca/elections/federales2008/debat/debat_plus.shtml
I don't know where to find the english one though. I only saw the french one (most of it, anyway). It was pretty much a 4 against 1 on Harper. I was surprised at how little of an accent Jack Layton had. Elisabeth May's french wasn't all that good, but at least she was out there and did her best. |

It was boring again. All four went after Harper who showed common sense not to get vocal at any of them and for that reason he will get my vote. Dion was lousy and got nailed by Layton. Duceppe and May were both useless. May cutting everybody and speaking when others were and Duceppe making issues on subjects irrelevant to most Canadians. When you look at all the candidates four of them wouldn't be able to lead a badmington team. |

Haha I dont know I live in Canada yet found the US elections 100% more interesting and important. I can tell you though that conservatives (Harper) Came out the best |
