As a Vancouver native who recently went through the same process, except to get into the US, you are right to give yourself plenty of time. Once you become a permanent resident, you will be entitled to work, go to school, everything a Canadian citizen can do, except vote. It takes a great deal of time and patience, but the paperwork is such that regular individuals like you and I can complete the process on our own. If English is not your first language, you may want to get some help to make sure you fill out the paperwork properly.
There are many people who immigrate from overseas to Canada as it is apparently "easier" to get into than the United States. That said, a friend from the US married a Canadian and was going through the application process at the same time as I did to immigrate to the US and it took nearly the same amount of time.
You'll love Vancouver! It's a wonderful place and a melting pot for people from all over the world with incredible diversity.
Good luck! |

Its not that hard to go to canada, i hear that they are opening the boarder from canada and the united states kinda making it like one or something like that but its true so maybe by those 2 or 3 years it would be lots easyer for you (sorry not a great speller) nwho, but for now you should consider a passport for the both of you there really bitchy about that now... also just to be safe start looking around for homes and jobs in canada so by the time you get there you have every thing ready for you :) that would be a big pluse.. Oh and one more thing learn freanch lots of ppl over there speak freanch pluse is a beautiful languge hehe they are those french cds at anybook store they really work trust me :D |

First of all, you and your daughter should become PR (permanent resident)....you'll need to submit documentation of your age, work experience, education, and more in order to qualify for permanent resident status....go to the nearest Canadian Embassy and/or Consulate....btw, just for your information, it's "Vancouver" not van cover :p |

Here you go...how to immigrate to canada |
|

WonderingWhy

You dont have to do anything in the States. You can leave whenever you want to.
You DO have to do things to get your paperwork in order for CANADA, though.
Go to www.cic.gc.ca and find out what category you'll fit under to apply to immigrate to Canada (eg. skilled worker, family class, etc). Then start your application right away, because it can take up to 3 or 4 years to be approved (if you meet the conditions).
Good luck!
Edit: I guess the only thing you would have to do in the States is make sure you can legally leave the country with your daughter, if the father is in the picture. If you have joint custody you cannot just take off and leave the country. He would have to consent to you taking your daughter. |

boom.

Well first of all you should learn how to spell Vancouver... |

You have to start by filing for residency and can do start the process by going to the government's website and clicking on "Permanant Resident" Or "Immigration." Depending on the reason, you might have a tough time. You will need a couple thousand dollars, an FBI check, a health check and other things. If you have no family to sponsor you, you might want to try to get a job first. |
