What do you make of this article excerpt claiming that Canada lacks land?

Basic Economy. Canada is a resource rich, but land and people poor, country. While physically vast, there are geographic limitations on where people can live such that most of the population is located around the Great Lakes, and in the Saint Lawrence River Valley. This has meant, however, that the natural resources throughout the country can be exploited more fully.

(Are two people per square km really that intimidating and bothersome?)

Still massive amounts of unused good land, just people gravitate south.
2 per km, is great even allowing for inhabitable land

The term "...land and people poor..." simply means that, despite our large area, our population density is quite small. The excerpt does not seem to imply that Canada "...lacks land...". The vast majority of the land is rocky and quite barren. This makes it not very arable and, thus, not attractive for any settlement.
The Canadian population is concentrated around the Great Lakes and St. Lawrence River valley for at least three reasons:
1. ease of trade and tourism with the United States;
2. gentler climate;
3. presence of arable (farmable) land

The excerpt simply states that most of the population of Canada lives near areas where living conditions are easier. It is not intended as a derogatory remark about population density.

Relax, there is nothing derogatory in that statement. For our size we have an extremely small population. Also for our size we have a great deal of land that is not easily inhabited. Our population is concentrated within 100 miles (160 Kms) of our southern border. This is for a number of reasons already cited. Plus as gregarious animals we tend to herd together with other animals of our species for socialization, security, and entertainment.

Helena
I disagree with with them completely. I think we are not at all intimidating having 2 people per square km. I rather like it. It is better than the stats for Asian countries for sure. It is way too crowded. That is just someone's opinion.

I agree with Z and Tom...there is nothing wrong with this statement. Take a few moments and read it carefully.
