After 9/11 the governments of Canada, USA, Mexico and Bermuda agreed to the "Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative." Phase 1 is in place right now and requires that citizens of these countries travelling between these countries via commercial or private aircraft must have a valid passport. Travellers entering these countries via land or sea currently only need proof of citizenship and a government issued photo ID such as a driver's licence. Affective June 2009 passports will be necessary for all travellers crossing the border regardless of their mode of travel.

As far as money goes, US currency is accepted pretty well anywhere in Canada. The exchange rate will vary from one day to the next and from ne retailer to the next. Your best bet is probably to use as little cash as possible and instead use credit/debit cards for purchases.

A passport, money to show you can support yourself and a clean criminal record, nothing in the past and nothing pending. The border is also patrolled where there arent crossings.

Along with the proper identification, clothes would be very helpful.

It depends...are you driving or flying? If you are driving (and this is assuming you are an American citizen) all you need is your birth certificate and drivers license. If you don't have a drivers license then a state id will suffice. Now if you are flying then you will need your passport. Now come June 2009 regardless if you are driving or flying you will need your passport. I know this because I went to Canada in November and looked all this stuff up. I drove and just took my birth certificate and drivers license. I got in fine and left fine.
Money: I didn't exchange any money. I just used my credit card and check card. As long as it has a major credit card logo on the card like VISA or Mastercard you're fine. I used my check card at their ATM and withdrew Canadian cash that way. It's easier.

A reason why you are crossing

If you don't have your passport just keep saying " uh uh " and they will assume your Canadian =P

to cross the border you need a passport except for the border between windsor ontario and detriot michigan! that border you can use 2 items of identity like your drivers license and birth certicficate or something like that! hope this helps!

You just need a passport as far as I know. You can exchange money to the canadian kind when you get there, but I think many border towns use both US and Canadian dollars.
