Eau de Pivoine

What do you need to cross the Canadian border nowadays?

Is the proof of residence/citizenship enough, or do you need a passport?
Also the trip is not going to be by plane. It's a cruise trip, to Alaska, but I guess it goes through Canadian waters. Anybody who knows?

You're not required to have a passport when traveling by land and sea but you need a government issued photo id such as a driver's licnse and your birth certificate.

Ms Shlee
You need a passport if you are flying but you are not.
Government issued i.d is fine.
2 Pieces or more is usually best.

Brian M
No, YOU DO NOT NEED A PASSPORT, until June 1st, 2009. If you are DRIVING out of country, or over the border for that matter, bring an ID only, if your a permanent resident in the US, bring your P.R. card as well. Along with a birth certificate. The only time you'll ever need a passport, is if your flying until again, June 1st, 2009, and you need that going through customs at the airport. Other than that, NO, you do not need a passport.

You need proof of US citizenship and government issued photo ID. A passport will take care of both of those. A heads up for anyone in the US - get a passport - it will be needed for traveling to the Caribbean and Central/South America, as well as most other countries in the Eastern Hemisphere.

The way I think it works is that it is harder to get back into the U.S. after leaving it than to get into Canada. A valid U.S. drivers license will still get you into Canada, but not likely will get you back through U.S. customs. You should get a passport just to be safe. The Cruiseline should be able to help you with this. This situation is constantly changing so be safe... get a passport.

cee.lynn
Yes, you do need a passport.

Passport bring all the Id you can
