"Hi'....well it's funny but everyone on this Continent is an American actually , as it includes North America,Central America and South America !
The "America's" are named after Amerigo Vespucci, the Italian explorer !
*But*..the citizens of the United States call themselves "Americans" and to me when they say "we're American" rather than U,S. citizens I chuckle a bit as it seems such a grandiose statement !
Since the U.S. refers to themselves as Americans I will always refer to myself as Canadian !
It's funny that this problem does not exist in Europe as Danes, Swiss,Italian, Dutch, German etc. etc.refer to themselves as "European"!
As long as the U.S.A monopolises the term "American" as if they are speaking on behalf of the whole Continent on this side of the Atlantic ,I then rest my case that quite often they don't exactly have things correct ! *lol*
That's all I'd like to say actually as I'm Canadian (and trying to be polite ),with the exception of wishing everyone a very "Merry Christmas" including my good neighbours immediately to the South , namely "the United States "! *S* (Michael C...)
**************************************...
EDIT...it is interesting to note all the "Thumbs Down" to most of the answers ! The asker clearly stated the question was for "Canadians" but I'll venture to say that once again certain folks just are unable to mind their own business...the second time that I rest my case ! *lol* |

I think when a country makes a man like George Bush president for two terms, enough said. |

I think that, like Canadians, Europeans, Australians, South Americans, Asians and any other people, Americans cannot and should not be judged to be all the same or punished for the actions of their leaders. I think the majority of regular American people are just trying to live their lives and survive, just like the rest of us. |

I'm sorry for answering this question (I'm Mexican-American) but I also think Americans are brainwashed. I'm not sure how other first-world countries are, but I do know that America is filled with ignorant & superficial people. |

The only time americans really ever cross my mind, is when answering questions on here. The minute I am off the computer....Poof!.....there go the americans, until the next time I am here, answering questions about my igloo, the polar bear I ride to work, and ending all my sentences in eh.
But on a more serious note, as I grew up in a border city(Niagara Falls), and dealt with Americans every day as tourists.....the majority were nice people. Of course its the ignoramuses who I remember the most......I also lived in the US for a bit. Again, mostly nice people. |

There was a line out of V for Vendetta about America having it all and squandering it away. I think that it is true back after WW II when most of the industrial countries were in ruin America was able to rise to the top and stay there for a time but they have wasted it all and now they are the laughing stock of the world and have once again plunged us into another depression that hopefully we won't have WW III at the end of the depression as we did the last time.
I think that the most Americans are too caught up in the hype of "how good" America is to notice the world has moved on. Just look at the tanks that Detroit has produced for sale in North America even though they make smaller cars in other countries they just can't seem to think outside the box.
I'll take the higher taxes and socialised health care because I know I live in a FREE country and it will stay that way can the same be said for the US? |

I live in Ottawa, and have experienced both sides of the border, through travel to NYC, upstate New York, Hawaii. From what I have seen, americans are fairly similar in character to Canadians. They have a few little quirks, but then again, Who doesn't? I think that some canadians seem to have the impression that Americans are dumb, illiterate, etc; These particular Canadians are as unsophisticated as their view of americans. All in all, Americans are pretty nice people, and the US is a great country to visit. |

Don't judge all U.S citizens by the media. Some of them are actually pretty bright and do care about the world. Yes, one can say there are a lot
of superficial, ignorant folk there. But I think most countries do have some of that kind. Times are changing in the states and with the new leader I think the U.S might get onto a different track. People are waking up over there. I'm serious. And no I am not Canadian as of right now, but I could not resist leaving an answer. |

I worked with several Americans this year. They came up here to give us a hand because we could not find enough workers. In all honesty, they were very nice, pleasant people. We teased them, and they did the same to us. They continuously stated how they hate Dubya, and spoke very highly of Canadians. Several of them said they would love to live here....complimenting us how we "see no color"... as opposed to what they deal with in the south. Myself - I dislike their gov't, but not the people. |

People are people. I wouldn't like it if we as Canadians were stereotyped based on the actions of a select few.
I both love and welcome our differences, small as they are. Basically, we're all just people trying to make a good life for ourselves and our families. There are good people everywhere in the world and no matter where we live, we really aren't that different from each other.
I have had some of the best times in my life down in the US and met some pretty memorable souls that I will always call my friends. |

I know I should have not answered because I’m from the U.S but I think most Americans are stupid they either dropped out of school or just dume idiots. Its not just Americans, there are dume people all over the world and u haven’t really lived close enough to them to know how there like. So u can only observe us because were the closest country to Canada but I agree with some Canadians. There are a lot of Americans who are smart so u really cant judge us all only the ones u have meet. |

I have met many Americans. I no longer really criticize 'citizens' because all citizens aren't alike or the same in mentality or appearance. But I will criticize people in general. There are good, cool, boring, ugly, hot, annoying, stupid and ignorant people from every country in the world.
the Americans I have met so far seemed to be alright, normal, everyday people. I found it hard to understand the guys I met from Texas, as their southern twang really messed with my English Canadian ears, but nothing out of the ordinary. |

The USA is one of the most populous countries in the world. It is very hard to describe them all as though they were one person. I got my first experience with Americans when I was sixteen, and I went trailering in Montana for two weeks in August of 2007. I live in Alberta. Even though it wasn't THAT far from Canada, it was a completely different people that lived there. Things I noticed particularly is how harsh and loud everyone spoke. It wasn't like here where people keep there voices down most of the time. Also, people would come up and talk to you (occasionally) as though they could care less about your privacy. Very different!
However, that was merely what I experienced. What I think is somewhat different, since the USA is one of the biggest countries in the world. I would give you different but similar answers if your question refers to the American government or the American people. I think for both they are generally very self-absorbed in their own country. For many of them, the USA is the entire world. They don't comprehend that there may actually be important players elsewhere in the world. |
