What do you think of Cdn dollar being worth more than the US dollar? |
The Canadian dollar rose above parity with the U.S. dollar for the first time in 31 years on Thursday as the Canadian currency's commodity-fueled rise was helped by a sharply falling greenback.
Canadian bond prices fell alongside U.S. treasuries.
The Canadian dollar rose as high as C$0.9996 to the U.S. dollar, or US$1.0004, according to Reuters data, before dipping back below the level.
At 11 a.m. (1500 GMT), the currency was at C$1.0003 to the U.S. dollar, or 99.97 U.S. cents, up from C$1.0152 to the U.S. dollar, or 98.50 U.S. cents, at Wednesday's close.
Interesting development, the US is in a real economic slump that is going to get a lot worse before it starts to recover.
Time to head south and buy a new car and a few other things. Additional Details Cdns are saving as much as $20,000 shopping for luxury cars in the US. the average car is about $9000 cheaper in the US - so even with duties you save a lot of money. Duty is not very high at all.
Its a good time to buy appliances south of the border, boats, all big ticket items, like a cessna skyhawk 172 :-) |

I don't think it will last. For me it's kind of good and bad. I get paid in USD but my wife gets paid in CND. So if the Canadian Dollar goes up, I get a pay cut but my wife gets more purchasing power so I think it's all a wash in this household.
To answer a question posted by Charlie here, you don't need to pay duty on vehicles manufactured in North America, it's part of the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA).
If the vehicle is manufactured outside of North America then you'll be charged 6.2 per cent of the value of the vehicle.
There's other costs as well but yes Canadians can save money buying cars in the US now. I even heard that car dealerships in Western NY (Buffalo, Niagara Falls area) are selling between 3-5 cars a week to Canadians on average. |

Finally, pride for Canadians having a dollar equal to the US dollar. But, I wish it wasn't in part because the US dollar is low against all major currencies. |

The Canadian $ is pretty stable against most currencies, it's the US$ that's weak. so :-
Canadian citizens head south. Your winter cruise will cost you less this year.
US Citizens stay home. If you live in say, Montana, it's gonna be an expensive winter. If you can Florida might be a better choice than a cruise.

It isn't such a bad thing for Canadians.
As for Duty.. Canadians do have to pay duty on a certain amount depending on the length of their stay in the US. So if I stayed there for a weekend I could bring back 100 dollars american.. If I stayed there for a week I can bring back a 500 dollars.
But yes the bigger ticket items you do get dinged with duty charges. However I am not sure how much. |

It's great if you are in Alberta and in the energy business.
It sucks if you are working in the lumber industry or are a factory worker.
Depending on who you are the strong loonie isn't exactly a godsend. |

Well, right now, the conversion sites are showing the American dollar is a bit over the Canadian dollar, but they are very close. This is good for Canadians, but if you go across the border and buy a new car or over $400.00 worth of merchandise at a time, don't you have to pay large duty fees when you return to Canada? |
