What do you think of Vancouver? |
I live in Vancouver and was wondering what other people thought about the city. Downtown mainly. Anyone answer... those who live here, those who have just visited, those who have heard opinions of it. Thx! |

It is a very nice and multicultural city with lots of friendly people. Downtown look really cool with all the skyscrapers. Crime and Homelessness have become big problems lately. |

i've been there once, and i love it. The only bad part I saw was the downtown east side (I ended up there accidentally). |

I loved it. I lived there 20 years and would still be there if I had not been offered my dream job in Los Angeles. |

I love Vancouver. I especially like going Downtown at Christmas... all the decorations, the snow on the mountains. The mountains can still take my breath away after all these years. Even all the new condo towers have their own kind of beauty that adds to the Vancouver skyline. It really is a beautiful city. |

Not warm enough in the summer, fairly mild in the winter but too wet, strange people, terrible pizza, overabundance of sushi, overall a little snooty and frigid.
Also, idiotic government, and a tendency to promote itself as being green, which is BS. |

Best city ever except the nasty parts like hastings and east Vancouver. |

I was born and raised in Vancouver, and I will be moving back next year after an absence of almost forty years. My father says that he is so old that he remembers when Mount Pleasant was pleasant. (it actually used to be, by the way). I'm old enough to remember when the Oakridge Shopping Centre at Cambie and W 41st was just bush. I even remember June 1958. I was just a little kid, but I remember when the Ironworkers Memorial Bridge (Second Narrows in my day) collapsed during construction and nineteen workers were killed. I still think of that (with gratitude but not fear) whenever I drive to North Van.
I also remember:
1. a toll on the Lions Gate Bridge.
2. Harry Rankin and Tom Campbell locking horns when they were alderman (the term in those days) and mayor respectively.
3. when the junk man had a horse and wagon, and eggs and milk were delivered.
4. the scandal when Wreck Beach (the nude beach) opened up--and a local church lady got hurt on her way down the slope to give a piece of her mind to the naked people. (The Bible tells us to clothe the naked, but I don't think the good Lord meant for us to climb down embankments to scold sunbathers).
5. working at the White Spot as a carhop, and spilling a chocolate shake INSIDE a girl's dress. The fabric sort of went forward when she leaned over to hook in the tray and (only being sixteen) it was the first time I had ever seen a pair of those--except in National Geographic of course.
6. Rolf Harris, and popular Australian singer and comedian, who wrote a song about Vancouver.
The chorus of the Rolf Harris song is a good summary of my attitude to my home city.
"The more you try to grind it down,
The better I like Vancouver town".
A lot has changed in the meantime. Vancouver seems to be a love-it-or-hate-it kind of place.
At the end of the day, Vancouver is my favourite city in Canada, despite its well-publicized problems. |

I'm from Vancouver, and I always heard people say it's the "best city in the world" but I found that a little ridiculous, even though I really loved Vancouver.
I've moved to Ontario for university, and I've had the chance to see Toronto, Montreal, Ottawa and other places in South Western Ontario, and in my opinion Vancouver is easily the best city in Canada, and I tell everyone to at least visit once. I'll be moving back after university.
It has problems and problem spots, but so do most cities. I love the laid-back attitude, the nature and how close it is, downtown and all the other neighbourhoods.
I would recommend Douglas Coupland's "City of Glass" it's a collection of snippet descriptions and photos! |
