What documentation do you need to cross the border from the U.S into Canada?

It used to be that you could just use a drivers licence, but I"ve heard that you now need a passport? Is this true?

All you need presently to get into Canada is a drivers license, though sometimes they do ask for proof of citizenship (birth certificate), but not usually.

HOWEVER!! ... to get BACK IN to the US, you will need both a drivers license AND birth certificate, or other comparable ID, such as a passport.

As it stands now, passports will be required to enter the US from Canada beginning 2007.

No, you do not need a passport until Dec. 31, 2006. I carry a driver's license AND a birth certificate just in case.

I live in Windsor and this subject is in the news all the time.

At last report you will not need a passport until July of 2009.

I went from Canada to the U.S. today and needed 3 pieces of id. Drivers licence, Birth Cert., and Health Card worked just fine. As long as at least one has your photo and one is your Birth Cert.

Still just drivers license if you are us born, otherwise passport , supposedly passport will be required after 1/1/2007 but most people think that will be relaxed Passport agency can't keep up

Bill

A driver license will do sometimes, but a birth cert or passport is better.

I know that the laws will change soon. So to be on the safe side. Bring your passport.
