to drive, you need your license, but its not a bad idea to have your birth certificate.
To fly, you need a passport (or proof that you have ordered it) |

Depends on your timing.
Until the end of 2007, you need proof of citizenship and a government-issued photo id. Most people use a certified copy of their birth certificate (with raised seal) and a photo driver's license. You can also use a naturalization certificate or certificate of birth abroad if appropriate for the citizenship proof, and another government issued photo id, like a military ID for the photo ID part.
At some point in 2008 this will change, and US Citizens will have to have passports to get into and return to the US. |

I was jsut there last week I am also a american citizen, we were crossing form the NY, Canada border but all they needed was a picture ID, we brought our real birth certificates too just in case, passports arent a law to cross teh border until next year. |

currently just a birth certificate - but the law is changing very soon where you'll need to have a passport. |

If US, Canadian, or Mexican citizen:
- traveling by air after 01 January 2007 must have passport to ENTER US.
- traveling by land or sea before 31 December 2007 must have proof of citizenship (passport, birth certificate, and/or naturalization papers) AND photo ID (passport, US or Canadian driver's license, or military ID) to ENTER US.
- traveling by land or sea after 01 January 2008 must have passport to ENTER US.
If a citizen of any country other than US, Canada, or Mexico, must have passport regardless of transportation method.
If a permanent resident (of any country), must also have proof of permanent residency (i.e. green card) as well. |

We are Canadian and drive a lot of cross border shopping. We notice at the border that if you are a visible minority, sometimes there is more checking. We get nailed too, but be safe and take at least picture ID and birth certificates..passports or other documentation if you were not born in the States.
Make sure to have a travel letter if you are travelling with kids who are not yours too. |
