What does Canada think of these USA criminals?

I agree with Canada that there should not be death penalty/capital punishment. On the other hand, some of the crimes of the people who are sentenced to death are such severe crimes that it's unthinkable.

How would Canada punish these crimes for example?

1) A man in Texas repeatedly raped and tortured an 80-year old woman because the defendant was aware she (the victim) had Alzheimers Disease and therefore in a court of law would get off on reasonable doubt that the victim was making up the whole thing. This ended up not mattering because the man tortured and killed the old woman.

2) An man in Oklahoma lured a beautiful 10-year old girl to come into his house and see his puppy, then he beat the 10-year old, raped her, tortured her, killed her, decapitated her, threw her body in a dumpster, and showed no remorse, and the victim's family suffered endless emotional distress over it. The crime was just brutal as it gets. The man casually with no emotion, pleaded guilty and shrugged his shoulders.

3) A man in New Hampshire committed repeated assault and battery charges on women and children in the town and kept getting reduced sentences due to a rather sympathetic police officer. He was in and out of jail many times. Finally after another repeated offense, the same officer ordered him to put his hands up, and instead he took out a hand gun and shot the officer 4 times, killing the police officer. Then the defendant drove off to Massachusetts and lived life as normal, making cell phone calls to friends and going to bars. When captured the guy showed no remorse. The police officer also was a brave hero in his local community, only die from this callous defendant.

So.....with THESE crimes, do you see where capital punishment as bad as it is, is to some an appropriate option? Though I'd STLL say because I oppose capital punishment, lock these guys up lifelong with no chance for release.

How can anyone justify capital punishment?

Guy Paul Morin. Wrongly convicted of the October 1984 murder of his nine-year-old next-door neighbour, Christine Jessop of Queensville, Ontario.

Donald Marshall Jr. Marshall was sentenced to life imprisonment for murdering acquaintance Sandy Seale in 1971.

David Milgaard. Wrongfully convicted for the murder and rape of nursing assistant Gail Miller.

And that's just three. There are millions more. I just don't think it's our place to allow ordinary people (judges, lawyers and police) with all their failings, predjudices and misinformation, to kill someone.

No, I don't want dangerous people out on the street. But...until we can be 100% sure that the offender is actually guilty, I'm not prepared to make that call. So, if we catch the guy ACTUALLY stabbing the person, fine, do what you will.

Insert witty name here
In Canada we have something called "Dangerous Offender" status. If someone falls under this category, they are locked up for an indeterminate prison sentence, typically life with no chance of parole.

Problems with the death penalty;
-doesn't undo what was done, and won't make the family feel any better. (If it does, while understandable, that's not a good thing)
-the justice system fails - A LOT
-believe it or not, the process of execution actually costs more then life time imprisonment

Not to mention death might be considered favorable over life time imprisonment.

I believe the worst offenders are social workers, shrinks and lawyers. They seem to go out of their way to put the worst offenders back out onto the street.
Then they can say they "FIXED" another one! When they re-offend it's always someone else's fault.
Does Capital punishment work? YES!!! You can be positive the SOB won't commit another crime.
PS I'm a Canadian and one of my biggest complaints is 4 star hotels for criminals

They would get life sentences in Canada. No chance of Parole.

OMG It's Brobee!

In my honest opinion, capital punishment isn't worth it in any case. Not only does capital punishment cost more money (tons of court cases, time spent on deathrow, appeals, the list goes on) then putting someone in jail for life, I feel it would be much better punishment to keep people alive and behind bars where they will rot the rest of their miserable lives.

Batman will get these guys - long live vigilantes!

I am Canadian, and I am in total support of the death penalty, on a case by case basis.
1)In your first example, as the defendant had prior knowledge of the victim's mental state, what he did was all the more heinous.
2)Anyone who does something like that to a child, doesn't deserve one more day of this life.
3)Its really sad when criminals repeatedly fall through the cracks. I would love to see the death penalty applied whenever a police officer loses their life in the line of duty. These are the people who are protecting us, and put themselves in harm's way every time they step into their uniform.

While I am on the fence as to whether the threat of capital punishment would deter more violent crimes from being committed, I still think it is a viable option for repeat violent offenders, mass murderers, child rapists, and those who kill our police officers. Although a specific, yet flexible, set of guidelines would have to be set. I don't think the death penalty is appropriate in a vehicular manslaughter case involving a police officer. ( Unless of course, the person behind the wheel was a repeat DUI offender) There needs to be a major overhaul done to our Criminal Justice system, starting from the juvenile courts on up. I really wish I could put faith in a system that focuses on rehabilitation, but so far, it is not working. And I believe some types of behaviours, you just cannot be rehabilitated from.
I don't see any sense in the hundreds of thousands of tax dollars that will go to keeping someone like Paul Bernardo alive and well for the rest of his life, behind bars. Five minutes alone with him in a locked room, is all the parents of his victims would need. And I am sure they would be glad to take care of it at no expense to the public.
Of course, I do not support vigilante justice, but if life were fair, that is what would happen. And as much as I hate to point out, countries with stricter laws, and harsh sentences, have lower violent crime rates.
Just my thoughts, rambling and incoherent.
