What does a Canadian accent sound like? |
I AM Canadian so I can't tell what my accent sounds like, can an immigrant or someone who knows please tell me?
Like do we pronounce some letters harder than others?
Do we slur our speech?
That kind of thing.
If there is a difference, then I want to know what a central accent sounds like. (Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba) Additional Details To a CANADIAN it wouldn't sound like anything obviously. I am looking for someone who knows to answe this question. Someone who came to Canada from another country or something. |

In fact, there are a number of Canadian accents, and they all fall pleasantly on the ear. There is a west coast accent, which is a little more laid back than the Toronto accent. There are the Newfie accents, and the Nova Scotia accents, which are quite distinctive, and of course there are the French Canadian accents. Then there is the Calgary accent (yes, there definitely is a Texas twang to Calgarian speech) and the Saskatchewan accent - There truly are an amazing number of Canadian accents and they're all great. |

we hold our vowels longer and most of us over exaggerate the "r".
I asked a Japanese exchange student which english accent is easiest for her to understand between Canadians, Americans from the southern states, Brits or Australians and to my surprise she said Australians! |

There's a slight sing-song rhythm to the Canadian accent that Canadians don't notice. If you spend a couple years away from Canada, you'll hear the sing-song when you get back. |

I'm from Scotland & I think we say "eh" more than the average Canadian! lol We live in BC and I have never heard a Canadian pronounce about as aboot! Perhaps it's an Eastern Canadian thing?

They exaggerate when they say the r sound, exaggerated long vowel sounds, and they say eh after everything (nah just kidding, but some do say that a lot) for example: americans say sorry, canadians say sooorry (like in moor), americans say (like in american), canaidans say aadult (like in cat) |

Pretty much the same as the Northern US accent. Except we say roof as "ruuf" while Americans say it sa "rough". Newfie on the other hand... hohoho, that's a completely different story. |

Canadians, scientifically don't have an accent (on a society level).
We are accent-neutral. |

When most people think of the 'Canadian' accent they think of the southern Ontario accent. There are really several distinct accents in Canada like the Newfoundland, the Maritime and of course Quebec accent as well as Native accents. The southern Ontario accent is the 'standard' Canadian accent and will be found in the prarie provences.
To extend or overdo your own Canadian accent try standing like you are very very cold. Shiver. Let your jaw slack but keep your lips almost closed. Now speak. Your voice should be a little higher than usual and you will tend to force some of the vowel sounds out and elongate others.
Okay, It's a little clownish but that is kind of how Americans hear us.
We also use our vowels. In words like 'house' or 'about' Americans think we say 'hoos' or 'aboot' but they are just registering the last bit of the vowel sound. They say 'haas' and 'abat' flattening out the vowel into a single short 'a' whereas we pronounce the dipthong by using and blending both the vowels in a 'ow' kind of sound (like in 'sound')
Hope this helps, eh? |
