To drive into Canada as of today, if you are a US citizen or permanent resident of the USA, you will need a "valid travel document" to be allowed in.
A valid travel document can be a passport, or it can be a combination of any government-issued photo ID and document that shows your nationality, such as a birth certificate or citizenship card.
Other valid substitutes for a passport are a NEXUS card, a FAST card, enhanced driver's license (EDL), enhanced ID card (EIC), or a certificate of Indian Status.
Starting June 2009 (unless delayed again), LAND and SEA border crossings will require the presentation of a passport, just like is ALREADY required for any international flight. They had to postpone this requirement because many US and Canadian citizens could not get their passports on time to meet the deadline.
Ms. Smartypants was the first one to answer you...and incorrectly...and I noticed someone gave her a thumbs up. I just wanted to supply you with some proof of the correct answer, so take a look at the three links I supplied below from Canada Border Services, US Customs, and Canada Immigration. (Hopefully, she did not give the wrong response to the other 7,141 questions she answered!)

You don't need anything to drive into Canada, but its what you need to reenter the US, a passport. Now they may waive that requirement for a time, but be sure to have plenty of ID ready. |
