What dose the maple leaf stand for on the canadian flag?

"Hi"....Firstly the National Official Symbol for Canada is the "Maple Leaf " . *S*

Historically it's believed that the maple leaf became a Canadian symbol as early as the 1700's as First Nations peoples were using the sap of the Maple tree for food long before Canada saw ships on her horizon and we must remember they introduced Maple Syrup to the Europeans..

The Maple Leaf has appeared on all Canadian coins in the past but is currently only on the penny.

Several groups have used the Maple Leaf as a symbol in the 1800's, including its use on the badge of the 100th Regiment. The same year (1860) it was used as a decorative theme for the Prince of Wales visit.

Alexander Muir wrote "THE MAPLE LEAF FOREVER" in 1867 as a song for Confederation.

It continued to be used as badges on military uniforms throughout the years as a Canadian distinction.

It wasn't until the colour of the maple leaves on the Arms of Canada were changed from green to red, that it began to resemble the symbol of today.

Finally the single red maple leaf appeared on Canada's official National Flag in 1965.

**************************************...

While I'm at it I may as well tell you about the beaver which is the national animal of Canada. It can be found on the nickel and is the national animal of Canada because the beaver is one of the main reasons Canada was explored and colonized. Trappers - or Les Couriers De Bois (Runners of the woods ) came to Canada for Beaver pelts which were very necessary for the fashions of the time in the Old World . It represents industry and perseverance as it's such a hard working little "critter" ! *L* ( and they're nice actually !)

And if your curious about our one dollar coin it's because the Common Loon is the species best known to most of us,and of course our "One dollar coin" has a Loon on one side , hence the name "Loonie" ! It's breeding range lies across most of Canada and it makes the most "haunting call " but is not the National bird, we don't have that category !

Sorry...got carried away there....hope that helps ya ! *S* (Michael C...)

Mr. Clean
The maple leaf on the Canadian Flag is symbol for the country because the maple tree is known commonly almost anywhere in the country. in December 15, 1964, they chose the maple leaf symbol with the red stripes after leaving their Original flag with the Union Jack flag which was part of the British Empire.

According to Ancient and Heraldic traditions much symbolism is associated with colors. The colors on the Canadian flag represent the following:

White - peace and honesty

Red - hardiness, bravery, strength & valour

The official Canadian colours were proclaimed in 1921 by King George V

The basic style shown in the picture of the Canadian flag is described as Emblem - reflecting the central design of the flag pattern

The shape and flag ratio of the Canadian flag is described as 1:2 ( length twice the height )

The left half of the flag ( viewer's left side ) is called the Hoist and red dominates half the width

The right half of the flag is called the Fly and also features the color red on half the width

The center of the flag is a white square between the two vertical bands of red

them;

The emblem on the Canadian flag pictures an 11-pointed red maple leaf which is centered in the white square

The Meaning & History of the Canadian Flag - The Maple Leaf emblem has no specific significance other than what it depicts - a stylized representation of a natural maple leaf

The National Flag of Canada is popularly referred to as the Maple Leaf Flag

The French name is l'Unifolié meaning the "the one-leaved"
The idea of flying a flag grew from the requirements of ancient warfare and the battlefield

Shields were painted with emblems to identify Friend or Foe

Warriors needed to know where their leaders were - the custom of carrying a pole was adopted

An emblem such as a shield, animal or religious device was attached to the pole for identification

The emblems were also used for identity and to cover suits of armour - Coats of Arms were born

These emblems were the forerunners of modern flags

The Romans were the first to use a cloth flag - they were square and fastened to cross bars at the end of spears - the idea of fastening a flag to the side of a pole soon followed

The strict rules of Heraldry are still used when designing an emblem and creating a modern flag

It doesn't stand for anything terribly profound, it's just a symbol with which most Canadians can associate. If anything, it is symbolic of Canada's great outdoors and abundant natural wonders.

theres a lot of maple trees, its like asking why is the beaver canada's national animal? ... cause there's lots and lots.

*ajidamoon* the Eh team
It does not really stand for anything, other than it is a symbol all Canadians can identify with. Here's some more interesting information on our flag:

The maple leaf has served as a symbol celebrating the nature and environment of what is now Canada since the 1700s.The number of points on the leaf has no significance on the flag.

There is a Maple leaf because it is a common tree in Canada. Also, the Maple tree is a protective tree.

It is a symbol of Canada, ergo, it stands for Canada.

What backwoods are you from? Even little tiny countries know what the Maple Leaf stands for.

Sorry I got nasty there - it happens after a bunch of questions like do you have computers, electricity, phones etc etc etc in Canada. That is not your fault but I took it out on you, Tina. Sorry 'bout that.

Homer
it means they like trees
