What exactly do I need to get into Canada from the US? I'm 18 and going to a concert and I don't have any warrent out for my arrest... =P. Do I need a birth certificate... a licence? Its just me and a couple friends. |

I would bring as much ID as you can. Just in case. The usual drivers license, birth certificate if you have one (although not required) and the usual junk. Going back home you would need the same but in the future you will need a passport to GET BACK IN TO YOUR OWN DAMN COUNTRY. Its whacked, I know. |

You need a Birth Certificate / Drivers License to get into Canada from the US.
BUT, going back into the US, you will need a passport if you are flying.
If you are driving, you have another year before you need to have your passport, you can get by with a birth certificate and drivers license. |

I travel into Canada all the time, you only need a licence if asked for it at border control, which they rarely ask for, and money for the toll depending on where you cross over. |

To get back, the new rules say you must have a passport. But the passport office is so far behind in processing new passports (as a result of the new rule) that if you have the receipt from the passport office saying that you have applied, along with a driver's license, you are ok. Here's the clip from the USPO website:
"Adults who have applied for but not yet received a passport should present government-issued photo identification and an official proof of application from the U.S. Department of State. Children under the age of 16 traveling with their parents or legal guardian will be permitted to travel with the child’s proof of application status. Children traveling alone should carry a copy of their birth certificate, baptismal record or a hospital record of birth in the United States in addition to their passport application status documentation. This accommodation applies to all American citizens who apply for passports, until September 30, when this accommodation period ends. U.S. citizens with pending passport applications can obtain proof of application at: http://travel.state.gov/passport/get/status/status_2567.html. " |
