There is often confusion about that question. It depends on your country of birth. If you are in the US but not born there, you will need a passport. Citizens of many countries and territories need visas to enter Canada. If you are a US citizen you usually just need a driver's licence as others have indicated.

If you are uncertain check the attached Canadian Immigration website.

You will need proof of citizenship to cross back into the US if you are a US citizen. If you are not a US citizen you may need other documentation. As of 2008 it looks like passports will be needed to cross the US/Canada border each way.

While your question is straight forward, the answer varies, depenidng on your nationality. Be sure before you travel.

Nothing like a Visa is needed to make that crossing. You will likely have to go through a quick scan by a guard.

mulldacity
All you need is a piece of photo ID and a birth certificate.

It is preferred that you have a Passport, but, it isn't necessary.

Who?Me?
If you are an american, all you need is your diver's license.
If you are a Canadian residing in US, you need your green card

Edit at 2:45 for Harish_Usa:
You definitely do not need a passport to come in USA, when you are a Canadian. I do it all the time, at least 5 times a year, and I do not have a passport.

harish_usa
Ideally you should have the passport. You must have at least a valid US Driver Licence.

To come back into US, you definitely need a US passport.

I see many reports on Fox News that the US- Canada border is porous, and many illeagal crossings take place. (So did 9/11 Atta come into US?)
