Hi"...The day after Christmas, the Feast of St. Stephen, the first Christian martyr, is better known as Boxing Day. The term came from the opening of church poor boxes that day; to distribute to the poor.
Nowadays, we often see, in certain families, gifts (boxes) given to those who provide services throughout the year.
It has noting to do with throwing out boxes that presents came in ,nor returning gifts, or boxing unwanted presents !
"Boxing Day" is listed in the Canada Labour Code as a holiday and Boxing Day is also a public holiday in the United Kingdom, New Zealand and Australia, as well as many other members of the Commonwealth of Nations and Greece. It is based on the tradition of giving gifts to the less fortunate members of society.
Contemporary Boxing Day in Canada is a "shopping holiday" associated with after Christmas sales and has
become very commercial wherein stores have "Boxing Day" specials and everyone makes a mad dash to the Malls and stores...with a frenzied mob mentality , wearing hockey knee pads , elbow pads and helmuts for protection , it's survival of the "fittest shopper" !
Fortunately, I am alergic to Malls and therefore don't have to endure the stampede ! *lol*
Hope that helps ya and a "Merry Christmas"! *S* (Michael C...) |

Boxing day.
Forget the historical stuff.
That's meaningless.
Boxing day is the day after Christmas, where psychotic insane individuals choose to do their shopping, as the best sales go on for a about a week. Stores such as FutureShop/BestBuy/Circuit City/The source open at 6 am on this day.
Insane, I'm telling you.
Stay away from the malls! |

Boxing Day in Canada is the day after Christmas (Dec-26) and is a national holiday.
Its origins was with the church, which would hold mass and collect alms for the poor on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day, and then the collection boxes would be opened on Boxing Day and the contributions would be distributed amongst the most needy of the community.
Nowadays, as with many Christian religious holidays, it has been commercialized and now symbolizes the people's need to shop for bargains. It is a day when merchants open up their stores after the Christmas break and discount much of their remaining material in order to try and make way for new merchandise and to try and reach their sales goals for the fiscal year.
The equivalent day would be Black Friday in USA, which is when the American stores give massive discounts and people line up for hours to get in and get huge bargains. |

In Canada it means nothing but so-called "bargain" sales. It's no longer even Boxing Day, but "Boxing Week" and even "Boxing Month". |

Boxing Day is 26 December (the day after Christmas). It was traditionally a day that presents you didn't need to use during the winter were 'boxed', like presents for summer and stuff. This doesn't happen much anymore, but it is still known as Boxing Day. |

Boxing day is not only a holiday in Canada but also in the UK, Australia, New Zealand, Greece and other countries as well. It's a holiday where people give gifts to the less unfortunate and it's usuall celebrated after Christmas day. |

It actually has to do with boxes, not fights, as I would have hoped. Back in the day, the King and Queen would give out boxes full of stuff as presents or whatever to the common folk. It became a yearly tradition and just about every country that was ruled by England at any point has a boxing day. |

I don't know how much of this is true, I don't live in any country that celebrates it, but someone told me that it is a day to thank people like postal workers for their work especially during the holiday season. I think wikipedia might have a better explanation of it. |
