yes Canada is an independant country. It became a country in 1867. We have our own currency (we use dollars but canadian dollars). The second largest country in the world by area and among the top 10 biggest economies in the world. Although we are independant the confusing thing may be we still have the queen on our coins. Her position in our government is as a figurehead only, cerimonial ties to the motherland but she nor they have nay power in our system . We vote in our own "President" (prime minister) and the other folks in government.
We are the U.S. largest trading partner. We buy more stuff from the US than any other country and sell more stuff to you than any other country. We share the worlds longest border both along the continental US and Alaska.

A country.

I just think that would be easily answered by a quick Google really, not too sure why you bothered with Y!A on this one.

Canada is a country. It's bigger than the US.

This has to be the dumbest question ever posted by an American.

I'm just a little curious...what did you think that Canada was? Yes, it's a country...*sigh*. I don't know why we are expected to know as much as we do about America when apparantly they don't even teach you guys in school that Canada is a country.

I'm a dumb American that's read over some of the answers given here.

When I first visited Canada as a child in 1947 I understood the place was a 'Dominion'. The Canadian Flag was on a red field that had the British jack in the upper right and had a russet colored maple leaf in the lower center.

Bermuda is another British dominion whose flag is similarly designed as the Dominion of Canada flag.

I'm told Canada became it's own independent country in the early '60's but when I've traveled to Canada within the past decade I notice that you still pay homage to the British Empire.

For example I heard a Canadian lawyer describe his client as being charged for 'offenses against the crown' and use the phrase 'In the Queen's name', And Canadians still got a portrait of a British monarch on their coins and have portraits of Queen Elizabeth II in their post offices.

That don't sound too independent from England to me.
