I think the problem in US-Canadian relations exists because of the misplacced border. Rather than being the 49th parallel, it should be the Mason-Dixon line. Many northern states have much more in common with Canada than they do with the South!
I view Canada-US relations as being much like sibling rivalries. We both had the same parent in the UK (although perhaps some hanky-panky happened - think of the French and Spanish influences), we both found our way out of the house (although differently), we both are each other's closest kin, but we both want to be "right" when we disagree.
Perhaps some Americans dislike Canada because we show that there are better ways of doing some things (e.g., explain how our gun crime rates are so much lower, our health care system so much more effective, our wealth disparity so much more reasonable, etc.). Perhaps some see us as free riders on US policy. Otehrs just don't like people who tell them "no" or who take a different view - the same as they don't like it when their sibling disagrees with them.
In the big picture, I think there is a tendency to take each otehr for granted, and to forget that we have often helped each other out, and will continue to do so. Remember, the Canadian military got to New Orleans before the US ... |

Most American's hate Canadians because we're pretty much similar, except the rest of the world likes Canada.
Jealousy!
PS, the people on here who keep saying Canada is cold and we speak french the more north you go are wrong. Our temperatures in the very far north, where like 1% of the population lives is cold, but most Canadians live within 500 miles of the US border. And some parts of Ontario are more south than some US states. Not to mention, most Canadians speak English and know about 3 french words. Quebec is the french speaking province and many Quebecers hate the rest of Canada and would like to separate. And not only that, ... where was I going with this.. |

Americans hate CANADA for the same reason we hate the rest of the developed world. The sit on thier asses and condemn us while we do everything on our own that should be done as a team. Dangerous people NEED to be delt with and when you have the power to do so it also means you have the responcibility to do so. America is the greatest nation on the face of this planet right now and CANADA gets to enjoy all the security and wealth and peace that goes along with being it's neighbor. They should be called Ohio 2. |

I live near detroit, so Canada is less than a half hour away from me. Canada at least in Windsor is clean, hip, and the ppl usually are very nice. The only thing is the further north you go, the more french ppl speak. |

We are not different but it is easier to get us to fallow our Government if we believe we are the best. Don't worry America is not the only one to use this tactic! Difference and the unknown lead to fear and fear to hate and with hate you are ready to fight for your country for we all know the country we live in is the best country and our own ways are the best ways and our religion is the best religion. Well all the differences are like farts your own is OK. But everyone Else's stinks! |

I have been to Canada several times and have a friend who moved to the US from Canada. My experiences have all been positive, the people I have dealt with were very nice, Toronto (the biggest city I have been to in Canada) is a clean and unbelievably safe city. Not to mention, the beer is very tasty! |
