Well, the only things that worry me as a Canadian is the larger cities where many people from different countries try to bring violence here, so there is a higher crime rate in larger cities especially Toronto. Overall though, we are a fairly low crime country and most of our cities are safe enough to leave your doors unlocked. As for it being safe to bring young children here, the answer is yes... we are a very accepting culture and people of all origins live here together without strife between any of us. Many Canadians are of Irish descent (as am I) and the majoriy of family names are celtic or british in origin. The Maritime provinces are said to be much like Ireland without the conflict. As far as your children having a better chance at life here, you will have to decide that for yourself... we have many excellent schools that really do not have the kind of violence seen in other countries, we are not at war with anyone and we are not a warlike people and we are not inclined to fight amongst ourselves because of color or race or origin. We have far less gun violence than many other places in spite of the fact that most people own a long-gun for hunting, we dont believe you need to carry a gun for protection and it is not allowed. The welfare of our citizens is very important to us as a country and we have free healthcare, and many programs to help families out if they are down on thier luck, we may pay a little higher taxes for it but we dont mind because we believe everyone has a right to be assisted financially or medically in times of need. All in all I am proud of my country and I think it is one of the safest and most beautiful places to live in the whole world. I know I would never move to another country and I truly feel that Canada is the most accepting and tolerant country in the world in which to live.

I think they are just worried about living in a foreign country and in a large city to boot. Canada has a very low crime rate. And to "sun flower".... we only pay a couple percent more in taxes than Americans and we have free healthcare. And no.... you don't have to wait 6 yrs for surgery. Is that starfish on your head sucking out all the brain cells? Just wondering... You're the one who sounds jealous by the way. Why do you spend most of your time asking and answering questions about Canada in a derogatory way? Meow!! I'm starting to wonder if you're not the latest incarnation of the guy who used to do this before he got booted off.... |

Canada is a wonderful place to live!!
I really wish I had raised my children here (and I am from the US!)
Most of Canada is safe. If you want to live in a city environment, then I recommend Vancouver, Calgary, or Halifax. Just personal preference I guess. Vancouver is wonderful.
Canada is such a grand country ... in size, beauty, and everything else. It's awe inspiring for sure. |

We, being a giant country with great natural resources have been dependant on getting the best and strongest from all points of the globe. We cherish a tolerant approach and are more like a tossed salad then a melting pot. While the US was formed through War and revolution, Canada's territories sent reps. to PEI in 1867, got drunk a lot, and agreed on a constitution. Please come, bring your children, it's good, and we try to make it better for everyone.. |

Canada has fewer concerns than most countries in the world, although big cities, mainly Toronto, have their share of violence, and like many western countries it is having to face up to the problem of Muslim extremists with its borders. You may have heard about a recently thwarted Islamic terror plot in Canada.
I grew up in Canada and later lived in Belfast for two years, and as much as I liked Northern Ireland and its people, I was immensely grateful to have not spent my childhood there. Canada has divisions between English and French, but it's much more civilised than the conflict between the Unionists and Nationalists in N Ireland (and there is far less of the intolerance towards ethnic minorities which exists in NI). Canadians worry about a resurgent Quebec separatism threatening national unity, and have some of the same anxieties as other countries, but it will be a great place to raise kids.
Incidentally, Northern Ireland also has free health care, RussReece, so that is not a unique attraction of Canada. |

Canada is a very welcoming country to new immigrants. As you may be aware our form of government is based on the British, so laws are alot like back in the UK.
Is it safe for your children? Of course, we are a member of the G7 with a very high standard of living. Education is free up thru high school and we have universal health care. I assume you will be relocating to one of the large metropolitan areas? For our population, we have a low crime rate.....but there is still the fear of drugs and gangs. Remember tho, this is generally not the normal situation in MOST neighbourhoods or cities.
Why not check out the Canadian government web pages and see what we have to offer. I'm sure you won't be disappointed!
Good luck |

I would think that depends on where you live..how safe it is..most ppl I know don't even lock their doors...I live in a small town in northern Alberta..I can go for a walk anytime of the night and not worry about anything happening....I would think the worst thing, is drugs... |

The best thing about Canada is that we're a bland, boring country where nothing really exciting happens (except for shootings in Toronto). While we have rivalries among different groups, it's nothing compared to the Troubles. We like to moan and complain a lot, but hardly any of us can be bothered to actually do anything political. Basically, Canada is a great country because politics here is essentially irrelevant (so is religion, thank god). |

Sun flower must be really jealous!!!
yes there is violence in Toronto or any other big city, but it is still safer as all the large America cities. Considering that the criminals bring the guns in from the USA. Our lifestyle is different, we don't have an idiot as President, we're more tolerant, we have a much better health care systems then the USA. And we don't; have as many ignorant people like sunflower living in our country. Come on in!!!! |
