Canada is a diverse country. If you like city life, there are major and smaller cities with all they offer. If you want rural life, there are sparsely populated provinces. There are many immigrants who prefer coming to Canada versus the USA because their immigration policies are different.
I suggest you look up articles about Canada, Canadian laws which interest you, and compare them to those in the UK. Because the Canadian tradition is essentially British, you will find many similarites. However, the French-Canadian tradition is proud and strong. All signage in Canada must be in both French and English. A knowledge of French language would be helpful.
One thing that Canada cannot offer you is tropical weather because all parts of the country experience freezing winters. There's a reason why ice hockey is the national sport! |

Be careful what you believe, in these answers....
Prostitution is NOT legal.
Public topless nudity is NOT legal...except in some private beaches.
Windsor Ontario, has no authority to legalize marijuana...it's a criminal offence, and as such is under jurisdiction of the Federal government.
Canada is not "just like the States" that's an insult.
French is spoken in many parts of the country..not just the eastern regions. However, most people will also speak English.
Best way for you to find out...Come on down for a visit. |

Canada is a left-wing liberal nation for the most part.
I've lived in both Canada and the U.S.
Canada wins hands down.
The high dollar is causing problems for some of the country's provinces, as there economies are manufacturing based. The converse is also true, Alberta and Saskatchewan are very wealthy places to live, as there oil economies are booming. Wages and standard of living is high. Canada can be described as having a labour shortage in some areas.
Politically Canada is, and always will be a mess, as Canada is a real democracy with more than two options for the electorate. Franco-phones and Anglo-phones appear to be getting along better than they have in the past. It is also important note that the political views in Canada very greatly as one passes from East to West.
Canada is FUN. Come to Canada to experience what can be experienced "Only in Canada." |

The weather is better, the people are friendly, and the snow is great <just kidding about that last bit. We don't get much snow here anymore; AND FOR THE RECORD, IT DOESN'T SNOW IN THE SUMMER. |

I am British and now live in Vancouver. I really like it here, there is lots of different things to do here. Most things are cheaper to buy. It is a lot cheaper to eat in restaurants. The weather in Vancouver is similar to UK. Most people speak English (there are not many French speakers on the west coast). |

I was born there and lived there till I was 30. I am now in the UK (15 years). It was ok But (big but) I found that it was MUCH harder to get a job in Canada than the UK (contrary to popular belief the UK actually has a lower unemployment rate)--they seemed to want you to have some kind of uni or college training for even the simplest jobs such as a sales assistant!
Health care is very good, but not as much stuff is covered as in the UK--for instance, you have to pay the whole hog on prescriptions, not just the dispensing fee. Like in the UK the dentists aren't covered by medicare and they are scarily expensive--1 tooth cost me the equiv of £250 BACK IN 1985!Housing benefit etc-forget it; if you fall on hard times you get a welfare check and need to pay for everything out of it. Limited social housing, and pretty much none for a single person.
When you do have a job they aren't as generous with holiday as in the UK--I had to work a full year in my job in Canada before even getting a poxy weeks leave. And then it was not on full pay but on what they call 'holiday pay', a small fraction. My best friend in Canada hasn't had a holiday in years because she cannot get by on holiday pay.
Weather--depends where you live, the West Coast is much like the UK. Big distances mean a car is pretty much essential.
Best things--open spaces, cleanness and some good shopping. laid back attitude. Lower crime than the USA by far.
I hope I haven't sounded too negative, it's a great place , but i have met some folks who think the roads there are paved with gold and that you can just walk into a top flight job and spend all your days skiing and hiking.... like any place there's good and bad, and only the individual will know what suits them. |

Canada is a very open-minded country. Prostitution is legal in many areas, as well as public, topless nudity. In Windsor Ontario, a measure to legalize marijuana was narrowly defeated. But some Canadians feel that their rights are constantly infringed on - like no longer can you smoke indoors, anywhere in Ontario. Even at a cigar shop - where Cuban cigars can be purchased - you can get a Cuban there, but you can't smoke it there. |
