At this point you don't need a passport to get into Canada but you will need one to get back to the US.
Canadians aren't quite as paranoid as the Americans (yet)

Money, the Canadians like U.S. money and it goes a long way. To get across the border, you will need a driver's license or other form of I.D. You do not need a passport. But that can also be used as a form of I.D. In other words, nothing special.

I would use a passport. I use it when I travel by car to Syracuse, New York.

My advice, use your passport.

Check with Canada Customs, call 1-800-O-CANADA and they can direct to you to their number. A drivers license is not good enough to get across the border. You will need a birth certificate as well. Also check what you need to come back too. Good luck and enjoy your visit here.

Sly
You will be required to show your passport OR if you don't have a passport a current picture ID and birth certificate.

I went last week and they are pressing hard for you to have a passport now though until Dec. 31st 2006 you can do it with a drivers license and birth certificate only.
