Government issued photo ID (drivers license)
Birth Certificate or passport
Any minors traveling need the same, as well as written parental permission if both parents are not accompanying them.
Pets need proof of rabies vaccination.
Passports will be required beginning 2007.
Some of the above is more n eeded to get back in to the states than it is to get in to canada. |

You don't need a passport YET. You need government issued picture ID. |

Presently I think you only need photo ID, but if you have a passport anyway you might as well bring it. Eventually it will be required. |

A passport. If you're bringing kids, they need one, too. If both parents aren't with them, you must have a note from the missing parent saying it's okay or a death certificate. |

y don't you just call, I went on a bus trip with my college and all we needed was a birth certificate and a driver's liscence/state id. you don't want to waste your money on a passport right now because you may not need it. |

Until 2008 you do not officially need a passport to come to Canada if you are a US citizen. (But if you have one, it doesn't hurt to bring it along). Some identification, proof of residence is needed, such as a birth certificate. Some may let you go with a driver's licence, but other borders are more less lenient with this.
Do a little research before you go about weather and culture. You'd be surprised how many Americans are disappointed when they realize that Canada is not all covered in snow all year. These kind of stories just add fuel for the Canucks to make fun of their neighbours to the south. :) |
