The preferred language in Montreal is French, however most of the residents also speak English. Learn as much French as you can before you visit. People there will appreciate your attempt and will more friendly and helpful if they think you respect their preferred language.

Languages spoken in Montreal (due to immigration): Italian, German, Portuguese, Spanish, Greek, Romanian, Yiddish, Arabic, Cantonese and Hindi.

But the official language of Montreal is French.
