What is the best Canadian Chocolate? |
I want to order a chocolate assortment for a friend who is Canadian. I am from the States and not familiar with what would be considered the best chocolate there. I don't want to send them some generic tasting chocolates. I have only come across a few names through googling but hoped someone here could help me. I came across these names...Bernard Callebaut / Rogers / Ganong.
Do we have any Canadian Chocolate experts here who could help me out?
Thanks in advance |

Bernard Callebaut is exceptional. No additives and beautiful texture. Purdy's is quite good, but not as good as Callebaut. Rogers is good, but too sweet for my taste. Ganong: bleh! If you can afford it, definitely go with Bernard Callebaut; your friend will not be disappointed!
Lindt is a good brand, but not Canadian. |

Bernard Callebaut by far. It is the best. You cannot go wrong with it. |

I have to confess I have never tried Bernard Callebaut chocolates, but am intrigued that everyone finds them the elite Canadian chocolate. As a result, I went to their websites to do a little comparison between them and my personal favourite, Roger's Chocolates.
- 100 premium chocolates at Bernard Callebaut are $120.
- 120 premium chocolates (450g) at Rogers are $90.
For comparison:
- Premium boxed chocolates (400g) at Laura Secord is $25
So if price is one of the issues, both of these are on the high end, but much better quality than what is sold in the local Walmart, namely Cadbury, Ganong, and others.
I was quite impressed a few years back (when I was in Banff, Alberta), I got to see a Roger's Chocolates store. I think they have closed down now as I could not find the store on their website, but the chocolates I bought there were really much better than any I had tasted elsewhere.
So if money is no object, I would look at either Rogers or Bernard Callebaut. Otherwise, Laura Secord is there from the low end of gourmet chocolates.
And if you are looking to know the worst and best of the low end, stay away from chocolate made by Regal or Comet and try to find some made by Vadaboncoeur. It has a pretty good flavour and texture for one of the cheap brands.
Now I have to go see if I can find some Bernard Callebaut and see if I have been missing anything for the past years. |

The best Canadian made chocolates are certainly Bernard Callebaut from Calgary, AB.
Best as in a finished product like truffles, pralines etc, as well as different degrees of couverture you may want to use to make your own chocs. |

Purdy's is another good Canadian chocolate company. But definitely Rogers chocolates are the best. |
