If you cabbed to the Greyhoud station it would cost you about $30 and then you'd have to get your tickets on top of that. For the convenience I say you should rent a car, it's definitely worth the few extra bucks it may cost you, plus you'll be more independent to explore the area.
Just a note about Masters answer, absolutely correct however a lot of people don't realize how spread out Calgary is, taking that route will take a long time, I know I've done it. But if budget is of the utmost importance then absolutely take the Masters advise, that is definitely the cheapest way.

Here's a link to a direct shuttle service from the Airport to banff. It's $53 one way.
Take the bus to the C-train station take the train to the end of the line and walk a few blocks to the greyhound bus depot.
Banff itself is small and you can walk most places and a cab ride will be cheap if you don't feel like walking. But if you wanted to go outside the townsite having a car would make a big diference.
