The train is the cheapest way if you book a week in advance with the Supersaver fare. Its only 76$ for one way Toronto - Montreal. Its much more comfortable than the bus too.

Even with the very high costs for gasoline, ridesharing is still the cheapest way to travel between Montreal and Toronto. Google "ridesharing Canada".
If a driver needs 60 liters of fuel to get, one way, from Montreal to Toronto, and he has, say, two passengers, then each person needs to pay for 20 litres, and even at $1.25 a litre, thats $25 one way, per person. Even if we give th driver a free ride, becasue its his car to pay for and maintain, call it 30 litres per rider, thats $37.50 one way. There isn't a bus ticket that cheap on that run.

Hitchhike for free. You can walk, jog, or run, but that would cost you a lot of time. Hitchhiking only costs you safety. :)
