What is the crime rate in Vancouver, Canada, also population breakdown?

I live in a crime-ridden Southern US city, murders everyday. Just got back frm Vancouver and was amazed by lack of crime, friendliness, (perceived) safety. Wondering what the crime rate is in Vancouver, also does anyone know the cultural makeup figures. My city is 60% urban black and unfortunately that seems to increase crime a lot.
Any info? LOVED Vancouver. The American South has many problems. Thanks!

As of 2005, Vancouver had the fourth highest crime rate among Canada's 27 census metropolitan areas.

However, as with other Canadian cities, the over-all crime rate has been falling "dramatically."

Vancouver's property crime rate is particularly high, ranking among the highest for major North American cities. But even property crime dropped 10.5% between 2004 and 2005, according the Vancouver Police.

Metro Vancouver has the highest rate of gun-related violent crime of any major metropolitan region in Canada, according to a new Statistics Canada study. There were 45.3 violent offences involving guns for every 100,000 people in Metro Vancouver, slightly higher than Toronto at 40.4 but far above the national average of 27.5, says the report, which is based on police-reported data from 2006.

I grew up in Vancouver but live in Washington, D.C. I am scared to even drive to certain parts of D.C. at night. Now that people can legally carry around guns in D.C. that makes me even more cautious. Plus I am cautious about walking in my neighbourhood after 9 pm when roving groups of teenagers are up to no good and have randomly assaulted people just for kicks.

In comparison, Vancouver has always felt self to me even the grottiest parts like Hastings and Main and around Japantown. However, every year I return it seems the heroin addled alcoholic homeless population seems to get worse. Vancouver does suffer from many home invasion and car break-ins and thefts because of drug users looking for a quick buck. There is the side issue of marijuana growers siphoning off hydro electricity from power lines to keep their grow operations running. Canadians are a funny bunch. Less concerned about the drug being sold then the pirated bootlegged power. But if you had the opportunity to move from the U.S. to Vancouver, I would highly recommend. Less racial tension more of a melting pot.

sure you are physically safe here but keep an eye on your stuff!!

Property crimes like b&e, auto theft, petty theft is rampant. Vancouver ranks #4 among Canadian cities overall for crime and in that category ranks in the top 10% of US cities as well. The suburbs fare a little better. Surrey (2nd largest BC city) ranks #14.
Here the stats for Canadian cities. http://www.macleans.ca/article.jsp?content=20080312_162114_5536

The second largest ethnic component of the city in general is Chinese in Vancouver/Richmond and Punjabi in Surrey. We have blacks here too (mostly sudan, rwandan and other refugees) Don't forget, blacks here were not historically subjected to slavery so they don't have the same "chip" or grievances against "the man" that you may have in the south.

well lets just say iv had 4 friends get shot in the past 2 months....i live in a citty thats 40 minutes away tho, its a bit worse out here. Were in the middle of a huge gang war. People check the paper online everymorning to see if another friend is in the paper. its sad. Just check www.theprovince.com every couple of days. There is always something different

Maybe???
Vancouver is no longer the safe city it is making out to be.
Shootings are becoming the norm. Open illegal drug trade is rampant, especially on Hastings Street, and in China town.
Cars are broken into everyday; car thieves are hard at work, and senior's houses are broken into to get cash to pay for drugs.
Crime in Vancouver is bad, and getting worse everyday.
Innocent people have been killed due to gang wars being fought on the streets of Vancouver and its suburbs.

The suburb city of Richmond is 65 % Chinese. The downtown core is predominantly Asian(Korean, Japanese, Chinese, Vietnamese). South Vancouver is more than 50 % East Indian(Sikh, Hindu)
